Dubai introduces enhanced truck movement restrictions from October 2026
The Roads and Transport Authority and Dubai Police have announced new restrictions on heavy vehicle movements across the emirate, designed to improve traffic flow and safety whilst supporting the logistics sector.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police General Headquarters have introduced truck movement restrictions taking effect across the emirate from 1st October 2026, as part of coordinated efforts to optimise traffic management during peak periods. Emirates Road remains exempt from the new measures.
The initiative represents a strategic balance between enhancing road safety and maintaining efficient commercial transport operations. By managing heavy vehicle movements during congested hours, the RTA aims to reduce journey times, increase road capacity and improve overall network efficiency whilst ensuring the sustainable flow of goods throughout Dubai.
Comprehensive Restriction Framework
The emirate operates a tiered restriction system tailored to different road categories and traffic patterns. Several key thoroughfares, including Al Qudra Street, Al Meydan Street and Airport Tunnel, maintain round-the-clock truck bans. Major corridors such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Beirut Street, alongside residential areas including Al Mizhar and Muhaisnah, are subject to 16-hour daily restrictions from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm.
Urban routes including Airport Street, Oman Street and Damascus Street operate under three peak-period restrictions: 6:30 am to 8:30 am, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
Supporting Infrastructure and Facilities
The RTA has significantly expanded its network of truck rest stops to facilitate compliance with restrictions. Fourteen of sixteen planned facilities across six strategic locations have been completed, developed through public-private partnerships. Recent capacity expansions have added 364 parking spaces—a 50 per cent increase—bringing total provision to 1,007 spaces across these facilities. Four additional permanent rest areas are planned in partnership with the private sector.
These modern facilities accommodate the emirate’s substantial logistics operations, with approximately 400,000 truck journeys occurring daily across Dubai. Monthly usage exceeds 150,000 vehicles, reflecting their importance to the transport infrastructure. Comprehensive amenities include accommodation and rest facilities, prayer rooms, restaurants, retail outlets and fuel stations, creating safe, organised environments that reduce fatigue-related risks and support driver welfare.
Driver Obligations and Support
The RTA and Dubai Police are launching a comprehensive awareness campaign to inform heavy vehicle operators, transport companies and truck owners of restriction timings, scope and available alternative routes. Drivers are urged to comply with restriction schedules, utilise permitted routes and access designated rest stops during prohibited hours.
Companies requiring heavy vehicle movements during restricted periods for essential operations may apply for a Mobility Permit for Heavy Vehicles in Banned Times and Roads through the Right-of-Way Department via the RTA website, helping to prevent traffic violations whilst accommodating critical commercial needs.
