Dubai Police cautions jobseekers on fraudulent employment schemes

Authorities warn of increasingly sophisticated scams targeting those seeking part time work, urging vigilance and proper verification of employers before sharing personal information

The Anti-Fraud Centre at Dubai Police’s General Department of Criminal Investigation has issued guidance to protect jobseekers from fraudulent employment offers designed to harvest banking information or enlist unsuspecting individuals in illegal financial activities.

Legitimate part time opportunities, the Centre explains, originate from legally licensed businesses with verifiable identities and established addresses. Genuine employment offers include transparent terms of engagement, clearly defined rights and responsibilities for both employer and employee, and recognisable recruitment procedures conducted through official channels.

The warning forms part of Dubai Police’s contribution to the Ministry of Interior’s “A Safe UAE Starts with Your Digital Awareness” campaign, launched during Cybersecurity Awareness Month to heighten public consciousness around online fraud and digital crime.

Scammers frequently prey on individuals seeking supplementary income by advertising seemingly attractive part time roles that prove entirely fraudulent. Such schemes typically aim either to extract banking credentials or to manipulate applicants into receiving and subsequently transferring money linked to criminal enterprises. These arrangements are particularly insidious because they involve unwitting participants in money laundering and other unlawful financial activities.

Dubai Police emphasises the critical importance of verifying any prospective employer’s identity and legal standing before disclosing personal details, accepting employment or transferring funds. Jobseekers should cross reference company names and registration information through official government channels and confirm they are engaging with a legitimate, identifiable entity.

Several protective measures merit particular attention. Applicants should never pay fees to secure employment, nor should they share banking information or one time passwords with individuals or companies claiming to offer work. Clicking unfamiliar links received via social media or messaging applications poses significant risk and should be avoided entirely.

A particularly telling red flag warrants immediate concern: any purported employer requesting that applicants receive money into their personal accounts for subsequent transfer to a third party in exchange for commission. Such requests almost invariably indicate involvement in illegal financial schemes. Anyone encountering this arrangement should cease all communication with the organisation immediately.

Dubai Police encourages the public to report fraudulent job offers, suspicious accounts or potentially malicious links through the Dubai Police eCrime platform or by telephoning 901. Sustained public vigilance and careful verification of employers remain essential to preventing online fraud and safeguarding jobseekers from financial exploitation.
