Eight Hundred and Forty Five Keys Above a Mall: Grand Millennium Al Wahda

Grand Millennium Al Wahda rising above the Al Wahda Complex on Hazza Bin Zayed Street

Grand Millennium Al Wahda is one building carrying 845 rooms, suites and serviced apartments, stacked above the Al Wahda Complex on Hazza Bin Zayed Street. That is a scale most capitals reserve for airport hotels, and it changes what the property can do. A building this size can hold a 36 square metre superior room, a 156 square metre three bedroom apartment and a 264 square metre presidential suite on the same lift line, and it does.

The mass of it sits directly on top of retail rather than beside it. Al Wahda Mall, carrying more than 350 brands, is one minute’s walk from the lobby, and the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station is a few steps further. The hotel was built into the middle of the island’s daily traffic rather than away from it.

The position on Hazza Bin Zayed Street places the hotel in the centre of the main island rather than on an edge, and that is the practical advantage of the whole property.

The Corniche is four minutes by car. Abu Dhabi Mall is four minutes. Corniche Beach is eight. The airport is thirty. Al Nahyan Stadium and the Red Crescent Authority are within a kilometre of the door. From here almost everything on the main island falls inside a quarter of an hour, which is not true of any waterfront address in the capital.

A complimentary daily shuttle runs to the beach and to the attractions, and parking is free for house guests. The hotel holds Green Key certification for its environmental management.

A 36 square metre deluxe room with a pillowtop bed and a city view

From thirty six square metres upward

Superior, deluxe and club rooms all measure 36 square metres and take city views, sleeping up to three, with premium bedding, down duvets and pillowtop beds. Club categories add lounge access. Junior suites run to 55 square metres.

Above that the building turns into something closer to a residential address. Executive one bedroom apartments run to 70 square metres and premium one bedrooms to 77. Executive two bedrooms take 110 square metres, premium two bedrooms 115, and executive three bedroom apartments 156. The presidential suite measures 264.

That combination of hotel rooms and fully serviced apartments under one roof, at five star level, is less common in Abu Dhabi than it ought to be. For a relocation, a long project or a family that needs bedrooms rather than sand, it removes the usual choice between a hotel and a lease.

The ladder is also unusually complete. A guest can begin in a 36 square metre room, move to 55 for a longer stay, and move again to 110 or 156 when the family arrives, all without changing address, changing loyalty account or renegotiating anything. Very few buildings in the capital can absorb a guest’s changing circumstances that smoothly. Check in runs from two in the afternoon and check out at midday.

The rooftop swimming pool and terrace with loungers

Six venues, and 350 shops below

Six food and beverage outlets operate within the hotel. Al Wahda All Day Dining Restaurant is the main room and carries the breakfast. Layali Shahrazad handles the regional programme. The Little Bistro and 90 Centigrade Café cover the lighter end of the day, while Porters English Pub and the 31 Bar and Lounge take the evening.

The wider dining advantage sits one floor down. A mall of more than 350 brands puts an enormous choice of food within five minutes on foot, which is more range than most resort hotels manage inside their own walls.

Porters English Pub is the venue that gives the hotel a life beyond its own guests, and 31 Bar and Lounge covers the quieter end of the same evening. Between the six outlets and the mall, a guest staying two weeks here would not need to repeat a meal, which is a genuine consideration on a long assignment.

> A hotel connected to a major mall does not need to win on restaurant count. It needs a good breakfast room and a lift, and this property has both.

Zayna Spa and the rooftop pool

The swimming pool sits on the roof and is open from seven in the morning until half past nine at night, with a children’s pool, loungers and poolside service alongside.

Zayna Spa runs from ten in the morning to eleven at night, seven days a week, across a menu of massages and facials. Al Wahda Health Club opens at five in the morning on weekdays and six at weekends, closing at eleven both, which is a longer window than most city hotels offer and suits guests keeping to another time zone.

Long stays, families and meetings

The children’s pool, the apartment categories and the mall connection together make this a straightforward family choice for a city stay, and the mall solves the long summer afternoon when outdoor Abu Dhabi becomes impractical.

On business, the meeting, banquet and event facilities are extensive, and the central position suits a visitor with appointments spread across the island. The bus station a few steps away matters for larger groups arriving without cars.

Against the other inland addresses in this series, the division is clear. Marriott Hotel Downtown takes the conference trade with more than 26,000 square feet of function space. Royal Rose takes the guest who wants ornament. Grand Millennium takes volume, floor area and length of stay, and the apartments are the reason.

For a long stay

The most practical building in the capital for anyone staying more than a few nights. Take an apartment if the trip runs past a week, use the mall connection rather than the taxi rank, and put the rooftop pool at the end of the day rather than the middle.
