Emirates Environmental Group Marks 35 Years of Transformative Sustainability Leadership
The organisation celebrates three and a half decades of environmental stewardship, bringing together government, business and community partners in advancing the UAE's sustainability agenda.
The Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) has marked its 35th anniversary with a significant celebration of its role in advancing environmental stewardship across the United Arab Emirates. Founded in 1991, the organisation has established itself as a cornerstone of the nation’s sustainability efforts, convening government representatives, diplomatic corps, business leaders and community members in pursuit of shared environmental objectives.
Over more than three decades, EEG has developed a comprehensive portfolio of initiatives spanning recycling and waste management, tree planting campaigns, community clean-up operations, environmental education and capacity building. Through these endeavours, the organisation has strengthened cooperation among governmental institutions, the private sector, academia and civil society—establishing a collaborative model that has become increasingly integral to the UAE’s environmental governance framework.
Habiba Al Mar’ashi, Co-Founder and Chairperson of EEG, reflected on the organisation’s enduring philosophy, noting that environmental protection transcends institutional, sectoral and generational boundaries. She observed that concepts once confined to specialist discourse—including climate action, the circular economy, environmental, social and governance standards, net zero commitments and biodiversity conservation—have become central to government strategy, corporate planning and public consciousness. EEG’s distinctive approach, she emphasised, has been to translate environmental awareness into meaningful participation, and sustained participation into demonstrable impact.
H.H. Sheikh Salim bin Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, an Honorary Member and longstanding advocate of EEG’s work, underscored how the organisation’s three-and-a-half-decade trajectory exemplifies its success in uniting diverse stakeholders and channelling collective responsibility into tangible environmental action. He called for strengthened partnerships, innovation and decisive action to address emerging environmental challenges.
Alia Al Harmoodi, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Sustainable Communities Sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, acknowledged EEG’s substantial contributions to environmental awareness, community participation and sustainability advancement throughout the emirate. MOCCAE presented a commemorative plaque recognising the milestone achievement.
The celebration also honoured numerous partners who have sustained their support across the organisation’s history, including ABB, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Dubai Municipality, Abu Dhabi Municipality, McDonald’s UAE and Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services, among others. Looking to the future, EEG has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental education, youth engagement, circular economy advancement, biodiversity protection and deepened corporate sustainability involvement.
