The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation has reviewed significant regulatory developments and strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening the UAE's nuclear sector and enhancing operational capabilities through technological advancement.

The Board of Management of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has convened to assess key regulatory developments and strategic programmes designed to reinforce the UAE’s position in nuclear science and energy. The meeting encompassed comprehensive reviews of operational performance, international engagement and transformative technological initiatives.

Hamad Al Kaabi, Director-General of FANR, presented members with updates concerning regulatory operations and organisational advancement. Particular emphasis was placed upon enhanced customer service delivery, the establishment of the UAE’s inaugural National Environmental Radiation Measurements Portal, and progress achieved in developing domestic nuclear capabilities. The Director-General also outlined FANR’s expanding international partnerships and the Authority’s forthcoming participation in significant global nuclear forums and discussions.

The Board received detailed operational briefings regarding all four units of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, together with particulars of forthcoming activities. FANR maintains rigorous inspection protocols at the facility to confirm operator adherence to comprehensive regulatory standards and to guarantee safe, secure operations throughout the plant’s lifecycle.

Board members were informed of research and development initiatives undertaken by FANR to support continued refinement of the UAE’s nuclear and radiation regulatory framework. These projects address essential domains including nuclear safety, radiation protection, environmental assessment and emerging technological applications, pursued in collaboration with domestic and international institutions. The Board reviewed progress in fostering Emirati participation within these programmes and in translating research findings into evidence-based regulatory decision-making that underpins long-term regulatory readiness.

The Authority’s Agentic AI Transformation Programme received particular attention, aligning with the UAE Government’s strategic vision for accelerated digital transformation. FANR is advancing the responsible deployment of Agentic AI throughout its regulatory procedures, government services and strategic operations, whilst upholding robust governance frameworks, security protocols and meaningful human oversight. This measured approach reflects the Authority’s commitment to harnessing artificial intelligence in service of more efficient and future-responsive regulatory administration.
