Future Health unveils comprehensive blueprint to advance Abu Dhabi's therapeutic innovation ecosystem

A new strategic framework outlines how the emirate can harness its distinctive capabilities in genomics, clinical research and specialist care to translate cutting-edge science into transformative patient treatments.

Abu Dhabi is poised to establish itself as a global centre for translating scientific innovation into patient care through a carefully calibrated four-part strategic framework. Future Health, A Global Initiative by Abu Dhabi, has unveiled an ambitious blueprint that connects the emirate’s formidable capabilities across genomics, health data infrastructure, clinical research, regulation and specialist care.

The white paper, titled The Future of Therapeutics: How Abu Dhabi can help translate the next generation of science into patient care, represents a collaborative endeavour with Strategy& Middle East, part of the PwC network. It examines how health and life-sciences ecosystems can most effectively translate scientific advances into therapies that are developed, validated and reliably delivered to patients requiring them.

Analysis undertaken specifically for this framework reveals a striking transformation in therapeutic markets. Whilst established approaches including small-molecule and antibody-based medicines are projected to remain the largest therapeutic segments through 2033, cell and gene therapies alongside RNA and DNA therapeutics are forecast to expand at a rate of approximately seven to eight-fold from current levels. This projection underscores the imperative for a selective, disease-led approach to building therapeutic capabilities.

The framework illuminates how genomics, multi-omics and artificial intelligence are advancing researchers’ understanding of disease mechanisms and enabling the identification of precisely defined patient populations. Research cited within the paper demonstrates that drug development mechanisms supported by human genetic evidence prove approximately 2.6 times more likely to succeed in clinical development than those lacking such foundation, illustrating the profound value of anchoring pharmaceutical innovation in human biology.

A distinguishing feature of Abu Dhabi’s position lies not merely in the scale of its genomic programme, but rather in its exceptional capacity to translate population-specific genomic variation into clinical action. This capability emerges through the seamless connection of genomic and biobank data with longitudinal health records, trial infrastructure and specialist care facilities. The emirate’s historical underrepresentation in clinical research simultaneously presents a compelling opportunity to contribute meaningfully to global therapeutic development.

Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, articulated the vision: scientific advances are fundamentally reshaping what is possible in medicine, offering novel pathways to understand disease and develop increasingly precise treatments. The critical opportunity now lies in ensuring this progress translates into therapies delivering meaningful outcomes for patients. Abu Dhabi has established robust foundations across genomics, health data, clinical research and specialist care, and by connecting these capabilities more closely whilst collaborating with leading international partners, the emirate can create a transparent pathway from scientific discovery to patient care.

The four priority areas through which Abu Dhabi will advance these foundations encompass expanding precision clinical trials utilising genomic and longitudinal health data; establishing clearer managed-access pathways enabling appropriate patients to access innovation whilst further evidence is collected; deepening therapeutic capabilities in domains where Abu Dhabi possesses distinctive scientific or clinical strength; and ensuring long-term patient outcomes can meaningfully inform future clinical guidance, reimbursement decisions and research directions.
