Kazakhstan's cinematic soul takes centre stage in Dubai as Film Week celebrates nation's cultural heritage

A curated selection of Kazakh films brings stories of music, ambition and resilience to Dubai's screens, marking the country's Republic Day through the power of contemporary cinema

Cinema has the remarkable capacity to distil a nation’s spirit into two hours of storytelling. This November, Dubai becomes a portal into Kazakhstan’s cultural landscape, as the Consulate General of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Dubai Media Council present Kazakhstan Film Week, a three day celebration of Kazakh cinema held at Reel Cinemas in The Dubai Mall from 6 to 8 November.

The festival opens with ‘Baqyt Qushagynda’ (In the Embrace of Happiness), a 2025 jukebox musical that weaves together the beloved compositions of legendary Kazakh composer Shamshi Kaldayakov. Directed by Sanat Shapashov, the film follows Bakhyt, a young man whose journey from his hometown of Arys to the capital Astana becomes an odyssey of love, ambition and the choices that define us. Set against the backdrop of Kazakhstan’s oil industry, it marks the first feature film to tell a Kazakh story entirely in the Kazakh language through song.

The programme continues with ‘Alga’ (The Start), an award winning sports drama directed by Yernar Nurgaliyev. The film traces the parallel journeys of two brothers whose lives are transformed when a visiting athletics coach offers them redemption through sport, after tragedy has steered them towards crime. Having garnered recognition at prestigious international festivals including the Barcelona Indie Awards and the International Sports Film Festival in Iran, the film exemplifies Kazakhstan’s growing reputation for cinema that speaks to universal human experience.

Almaz Tasbolat, Consul-General of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, describes the festival as a timely occasion to mark Kazakhstan’s Republic Day on 25 October. “Through these films, we invite Dubai’s audiences to discover our country’s rich cultural heritage and the aspirations of our people,” he notes, emphasising how cinema creates meaningful pathways for understanding between nations.

The initiative sits within Dubai Cinema Nights, a broader commitment by Dubai Media Council to championing world cinema throughout the year. As part of this vision, the Council continues to strengthen its international creative partnerships. Recent months have seen Dubai’s Media Council expand its creative footprint through strategic partnerships with Korean entertainment leaders, while the Government of Dubai Media Office has forged partnerships with China’s Shenzhen News Group, positioning Dubai as a hub for cross cultural media exchange.

Hesham Al Olama, CEO of the Media Development Sector at Dubai Media Council, articulates the deeper purpose behind such initiatives: “Dubai is home to communities from across the world. Kazakhstan Film Week reflects our belief in cinema’s ability to bring people together and share the stories that shape a nation’s identity.”

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Kazakhstan Film Week exemplifies the UAE’s broader commitment to cultural diplomacy and creative exchange. By providing a platform for Kazakh storytelling in Dubai, the festival reinforces the Emirates’ position as a global centre for media and cultural expression, where diverse narratives find audience and resonance. The initiative demonstrates how the region’s creative infrastructure serves not merely as a commercial asset but as a genuine instrument for understanding between peoples.

For Abu Dhabi’s creative communities, the festival signals the opportunities that emerge when cultural institutions collaborate across borders. As Dubai Media Council continues to forge partnerships globally, the model established through Kazakhstan Film Week and similar initiatives offers a template for how the Emirates can nurture world cinema while simultaneously building lasting relationships with creative industries worldwide.
