Abu Dhabi and AMD: Exploring the Frontiers of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Computing
A Meeting of Strategic Significance
His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has met with Dr Lisa Su, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of AMD, the preeminent global semiconductor and advanced computing enterprise. The dialogue explored potential avenues for collaboration across artificial intelligence, high performance computing, cloud computing and data centre infrastructure, bringing together Abu Dhabi’s technological ambitions with the expertise of one of the semiconductor industry’s most influential leaders.
These foundational technologies form the underlying technical architecture upon which increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems are constructed. While the most visible elements of the industry manifest as generative applications and digital services, their operation depends upon extensive computing capacity, specialised processors, secure cloud platforms and advanced data centre systems operating at considerable scale.
AMD’s Commanding Position in Global Computing
Advanced Micro Devices develops processors, graphics technologies and software utilised across cloud computing, artificial intelligence, enterprise data centres and embedded applications. The company’s sophisticated portfolio encompasses EPYC server processors, Instinct data centre accelerators, networking technologies and software designed to support high performance computing and artificial intelligence environments, enabling organisations to process increasingly substantial quantities of information and to operate complex artificial intelligence models with remarkable efficacy.
AMD’s recent financial performance underscores the rapid expansion of this strategic division. For the second quarter of 2026, the company reported record revenue of approximately US$11.5 billion, representing growth of 50 per cent compared with the preceding year. The Data Center division generated approximately US$6.7 billion during the quarter, an increase of 107 per cent year on year, demonstrating the formidable demand for high performance computing infrastructure.
Dr Lisa Su: Engineering Excellence at the Industry’s Helm
Dr Lisa Su stands amongst the most prominent engineering and corporate leaders in the international semiconductor industry. She joined AMD in January 2012 and has served successively as Senior Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Executive Officer and Chair, steering the company’s transformation into a major force in high performance and adaptive computing.
Her distinguished career encompasses senior positions at Freescale Semiconductor, thirteen years at IBM including Vice President of the Semiconductor Research and Development Center, and early roles at Texas Instruments. Dr Su was named TIME magazine’s Chief Executive Officer of the Year in 2024 and serves as a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her connection to Abu Dhabi’s developing artificial intelligence ecosystem extends further still, as she serves on the Board of Trustees of Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence.
Aligning with Abu Dhabi’s Digital Vision
The subjects under discussion correspond closely with the priorities established in the Abu Dhabi Government Digital Strategy 2025 to 2027, supported by an investment of AED13 billion and intended to support Abu Dhabi’s ambition of becoming the world’s first fully artificial intelligence native government by 2027. High performance computing and data centre capacity are fundamental to delivering such ambitious objectives, providing the secure environments and powerful platforms upon which sovereign cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence systems depend.
The meeting was attended by His Excellency Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority and Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of Mubadala Investment Company, whose attendance reflected both the strategic investment and executive government dimensions of the discussions. His Excellency Saif Saeed Ghobash, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Executive Council and Chairman of the Office of the Crown Prince, was likewise present.
The dialogue places essential computing capabilities at the centre of Abu Dhabi’s technological advancement, opening pathways for further consideration of how AMD’s technology and expertise may contribute to the emirate’s long term digital and artificial intelligence objectives.
