Maldives Prosecutor General Outlines Vision for Enhanced Global Crime Prevention Cooperation

The Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with the United Arab Emirates and the international community to address evolving criminal threats, according to statements made during the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Abu Dhabi.

Abbas Shareef, Prosecutor General of the Maldives, commended the UAE for its stewardship of the significant gathering, highlighting the warm reception extended to participating delegations. Speaking to the Emirates News Agency on the congress sidelines, Mr Shareef outlined his delegation’s strategic priorities for the forum.

Central to the Maldives’ participation is the advancement of bilateral relations with the UAE and fellow participating nations, coupled with a concerted focus on addressing transnational criminal activity. Cybercrime emerged as a particular area of concern, with Mr Shareef emphasising the necessity for coordinated international action against digitally-enabled offences that transcend borders.

Beyond conventional crime prevention measures, the Maldives is actively seeking international support for an artificial intelligence initiative launched by the nation. This forward-looking approach reflects the recognition that contemporary challenges demand sophisticated technological responses and collaborative development of innovative solutions.

The Prosecutor General reported that his bilateral meetings with counterparts from numerous jurisdictions have yielded promising outcomes. These engagements have generated substantive opportunities and identified pathways for future cooperation, with discussions centred on elevating existing relationships to more strategic and comprehensive levels of partnership.

The congress, hosted in Abu Dhabi, provided a platform for nations to exchange expertise, share best practices and establish frameworks for enhanced collaboration in criminal justice and crime prevention. The Maldives’ participation underscores the nation’s proactive stance on international security matters and its commitment to contributing meaningfully to global efforts addressing organised crime, cybersecurity threats and other transnational challenges.
