Masdar and Endesa mark beginning of Spain’s advanced battery storage expansion

Masdar and Endesa mark beginning of Spain's advanced battery storage expansion

Three battery energy storage projects across southern Spain will add significant grid stability capacity to the region's renewable infrastructure, representing a major step forward in European clean energy integration.

The construction phase has commenced on three battery storage systems designed to work in tandem with existing solar installations across Spain’s Extremadura and Andalusia regions. The projects, collectively representing a €25.2 million investment, will add 60.16 megawatts of battery storage capacity and 120.34 megawatt-hours of storage capability to the grid.

Ardila, located at the 44 MWp solar facility in Fregenal de la Sierra in Badajoz province, will operate 12 battery containers providing 36.10 MW of storage. This capacity will hold enough energy to supply the daily electricity needs of approximately 8,100 Spanish households. La Vega I and La Vega II, positioned at solar plants near Teba in Málaga, will each provide 12.03 MW across four battery containers, together equivalent to powering around 5,400 homes daily.

The partnership between Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company Masdar and Endesa traces its origins to 2024, when Masdar acquired a stake in a portfolio of Endesa’s photovoltaic assets in Spain. These battery projects represent the first storage developments to emerge from that strategic collaboration. The systems are anticipated to enter operation by the end of 2027.

Each installation will employ lithium iron phosphate batteries equipped with grid-forming inverters, technology that provides synthetic inertia by mimicking the behaviour of conventional thermal or hydroelectric generation units. This capability enables the systems to respond almost instantaneously to fluctuations in grid conditions, thereby strengthening the stability and resilience of Spain’s electricity network and facilitating the integration of greater volumes of renewable energy.

The construction phase will generate approximately 50 jobs, with commitments to source European-origin components and services, including inverters, auxiliary systems and communications infrastructure. At the Ardila site, Masdar and Endesa will collaborate with the Fregenal de la Sierra Town Council to identify local improvement initiatives, with funding allocated toward training programmes.

Dr. Ibraheem Almansouri, Acting Chief Operating Officer of Masdar, reflected on Spain’s economic trajectory and energy requirements. “Spain is one of Europe’s fastest-growing major economies and this growth requires secure, resilient power. These projects will help integrate more clean power into the grid and strengthen the stability of the electricity system. They demonstrate how strategic partnerships can accelerate the deployment of advanced energy technologies, strengthen grid resilience and support sustainable economic growth, and they build on the strength of our partnership with Endesa while expanding our Iberian portfolio.”

Masdar currently maintains 4.1 gigawatts of operational capacity across the Iberian Peninsula, with approximately 1 gigawatt under development. The company continues its global expansion strategy through partnerships with industry leaders. As reported in earlier developments, Masdar secured one of Greece’s largest solar installations, a 550-megawatt facility, and has commenced construction on Southeast Asia’s largest floating solar venture in Malaysia. The company targets 100 gigawatts of global capacity by 2030.

Research and technical validation will be undertaken in collaboration with CIRCE and the Institute for Research in Technology at Comillas Pontifical University, encompassing on-site testing and investigations into grid-forming operation.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

These battery storage projects underscore Masdar’s expanding influence in European renewable energy infrastructure. The company’s continued investment and technical innovation in Spain reflects the broader strategy of establishing Abu Dhabi as a global leader in clean energy solutions and sustainable development. By advancing energy storage technology and grid resilience internationally, Masdar enhances the UAE’s reputation as a pioneer in addressing global energy transition challenges.

The projects also demonstrate how strategic partnerships between Abu Dhabi enterprises and international energy companies can accelerate the deployment of advanced technologies that support global economic growth while reducing carbon emissions. The commitment to European sourcing and local employment creation reinforces Masdar’s approach to building sustainable value chains that benefit communities beyond the UAE.
