Mubadala Energy charts course to double output within a decade

The UAE energy company sets its sights on ambitious expansion across natural gas operations spanning Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Egypt and North America, while advancing emissions reduction initiatives.

Against the backdrop of ADIPEC 2026, one of the world’s most consequential energy gatherings, Mubadala Energy has articulated a vision of substantial growth. The company aims to double its production over the coming decade, with natural gas destined to comprise approximately 70 percent of its operational portfolio. This strategy reflects not merely expansion for its own sake, but a considered response to the escalating energy demands of an interconnected world.

Adnan Bu Fateem, Acting Chief Executive Officer, explained the philosophy underpinning this ambition. The company’s priority centres on translating strategy into disciplined growth and reliable operational performance, thereby meeting rising energy demand responsibly whilst delivering sustainable value to shareholders and host nations alike. The approach weaves together targeted investment with systematic improvements to existing assets, building what Bu Fateem describes as a more competitive and integrated portfolio.

Geographically, Mubadala Energy now operates across ten countries, with seven producing assets distributed across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean and the United States. Each region contributes distinct capabilities. In Malaysia, the company operates the Pegaga gas field, where recent expansion increased production capacity by 30 percent to 750 million standard cubic feet per day. This achievement, completed within ten months of project approval, exemplifies how engineering rigour and efficient execution strengthen existing infrastructure. In Indonesia, the company is advancing the Tangkulo development, building on established exploration presence in the Andaman Sea, with the Layaran and Tangkulo discoveries holding more than 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources.

The United States represents the company’s newest market, offering a platform for North American expansion. Mubadala Energy’s investment in Caturus LLC integrates gas production in the Haynesville Basin with the Commonwealth liquefied natural gas project, which reached Final Investment Decision in May 2026. The facility has planned production capacity of 9.5 million tonnes annually, with recently announced plans to increase capacity to 16 million tonnes per year. Meanwhile, in Egypt, the company has strengthened its position by completing acquisition of a 15 percent stake in the Nargis Offshore Area, complementing existing investments in the Zohr and Nour concessions.

Underpinning this expansion lies a commitment to environmental stewardship. Over the past year, Mubadala Energy reduced its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 30.9 percent. The company is adopting practical, accountable approaches focused on improving asset performance and investing in technologies that enhance operational efficiency. Digital technologies occupy a central role in these efforts. At Pegaga, a Digital Twin project provides real-time information on wells, reservoirs and maintenance requirements, enabling faster and more informed decisions. Predictive maintenance systems and real-time operational data help teams reduce unnecessary downtime, identify potential problems early and optimise resource use.

As ADIPEC 2026 convenes global energy leadership in Abu Dhabi, conversations about energy security and technological advancement take on particular resonance. Mubadala Energy’s strategy of pursuing growth through strong partnerships and clear routes to market reflects broader regional aspirations. The company’s geographical diversification allows it to balance producing assets, development projects and exploration opportunities, serving domestic, regional and international markets simultaneously.

Bu Fateem emphasised that the company is entering a phase focused on converting recent discoveries and investments into producing projects capable of providing reliable long-term energy supplies. Indonesia remains central to this strategy. The conversion of exploration success into operational reality requires not only capital and technical expertise, but also the kind of patient, disciplined thinking that characterises Mubadala Energy’s approach.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Mubadala Energy’s ambitious growth trajectory reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a global energy powerhouse with investments and operational reach spanning multiple continents. The company’s success in delivering reliable energy supplies to domestic, regional and international markets strengthens the economic foundations upon which the emirate’s prosperity rests, whilst its commitment to responsible growth and emissions reduction aligns with broader sustainability imperatives.

The focus on technological innovation and operational excellence, exemplified by digital twin systems and predictive maintenance, demonstrates how Abu Dhabi based companies are leading global energy transformation. These advances in efficiency and performance, combined with strategic international partnerships, position Mubadala Energy to navigate the evolving energy landscape whilst contributing to Abu Dhabi’s economic diversification and resilience.
