Musaffah’s transformative road network receives comprehensive upgrade to enhance connectivity and traffic flow

The Department of Municipalities and Transport has unveiled an ambitious infrastructure programme to reconfigure key thoroughfares across Musaffah, establishing improved connections between the industrial district, Mohamed Bin Zayed City and Zayed City whilst substantially reducing congestion and enhancing journey safety.
A comprehensive upgrade spanning approximately 21 kilometres of critical roadway has been announced by the Department of Municipalities and Transport, representing a significant commitment to enhancing mobility across Abu Dhabi’s vital industrial and residential zones. The initiative encompasses improvements to E30 and 8th Street in Musaffah, with carefully coordinated enhancements designed to accommodate the area’s diverse traffic patterns and support sustained economic development.
Enhanced Highway Infrastructure
The centrepiece of the undertaking is a new free-flowing highway along 8th Street, engineered with three lanes in each direction dedicated to through-traffic and flanked by three additional lanes on each side to provide seamless access to local shops and amenities. This thoughtfully designed separation ensures that expressway traffic remains unimpeded whilst enabling convenient access to neighbourhood destinations. The completed street will accommodate an estimated 4,000 vehicles per hour, substantially elevating capacity and facilitating smoother journeys across the district.
Comprehensive Connectivity Improvements
Beyond the principal highway works, the project incorporates significant enhancements to four key interchanges along E30, improved connections linking 8th Street with E20, and carefully planned modifications to nine strategically important junctions. These coordinated improvements are designed to eliminate bottlenecks and create intuitive traffic patterns that reflect how residents and businesses actually move through the area.
Strategic Cross-District Links
The infrastructure programme also encompasses two new bridges between Musaffah and Mohamed Bin Zayed City, alongside a dedicated pedestrian crossing, establishing seamless connections that will strengthen the broader emirate’s integrated transport network.
His Excellency Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director General of Infrastructure Development at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, observed: “Musaffah’s road network serves residents travelling to work, businesses moving goods and people making local journeys throughout the day. Planning for these different needs is essential to the area’s continued growth. By separating traffic passing through the area from local access and improving connections with surrounding communities, we can support economic activity while making everyday journeys easier and safer.”
The Director General emphasised the long-term strategic vision underpinning the initiative, noting that “this forward-looking approach will also prepare the network for future connections, ensuring that decisions we make today support Abu Dhabi’s development over the longer term.”
Part of Broader Infrastructure Vision
The Musaffah programme complements wider efforts to strengthen connectivity across Abu Dhabi, including a planned two-tunnel undersea link between the eastern tip of Abu Dhabi Island and Musaffah, passing beneath Khor Al Maqta and Al Hudayriyat Island channel. This interconnected approach reflects a comprehensive strategy to establish seamless mobility throughout the emirate’s most economically significant zones.
