Dubai Glydways Autonomous Transit System Enters Trial Phase at Bluewaters

The Roads and Transport Authority has inaugurated trial operations of an innovative automated mobility network, marking a significant advancement in the emirate's commitment to pioneering future transport technologies.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has commenced trial operations of the Dubai Glydways automated transit system at Bluewaters, unveiling a transformative approach to urban mobility that seamlessly integrates autonomous electric vehicles with cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies.

The initiative represents a milestone in the emirate’s strategic vision to establish itself as a global leader in sustainable and intelligent transportation solutions. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, presided over the system’s inauguration, undertaking an inaugural journey along the designated route at this prominent retail destination.

The Glydways system operates via sleek autonomous electric vehicles traversing dedicated guideways, independent of general traffic flows. Each vehicle accommodates between four and six passengers, travelling at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour whilst maintaining a single battery charge range extending to 250 kilometres. The technological architecture incorporates twenty high-resolution LiDAR sensors, complemented by radar and high-definition cameras, enabling comprehensive environmental monitoring and sophisticated movement management.

Designed with particular emphasis upon first and last-mile connectivity, the system establishes seamless links between public transport stations and residential, commercial and leisure destinations throughout Dubai. The trial phase, anticipated to extend for four weeks, focuses upon comprehensive assessment of vehicle performance, autonomous driving systems, sensing technologies and overall user experience whilst generating operational data to inform future expansion strategies.

The network’s architectural flexibility permits both ground-level and elevated deployment utilising lightweight structures, facilitating straightforward integration with existing infrastructure. This innovative urban mobility model operates on an on-demand basis throughout the twenty-four hour cycle, offering passengers direct point-to-point journeys with personalised in-vehicle climate control and entertainment options.

The system demonstrates remarkable operational efficiency, capable of accommodating more than 20,000 passengers hourly in both directions whilst maintaining headways of less than one second between vehicles. Furthermore, the investment model presents compelling economic advantages, with capital expenditure reduced by up to ninety percent and operational costs diminished by up to seventy percent compared with equivalent transport modes.

RTA has established the project through a collaborative public-private partnership framework with Dubai Holding and Glydways, reflecting the Authority’s commitment to leveraging international expertise and innovative solutions. Future expansion proposals encompass multiple routes, including a 2.8-kilometre connection between National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters, alongside planned corridors serving Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai Festival City, Business Bay and Mohammed Bin Rashid City.

Al Tayer emphasised the initiative’s alignment with the leadership’s directives to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global innovator in smart and sustainable mobility, whilst advancing an integrated transport system that enhances quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
