Music as a Bridge: ADMAF’s Three Decades of Cultural Diplomacy

For three decades, the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation has understood something fundamental about art: it speaks in a language that transcends geography, politics and division. Through ADMAF30, the institution pauses to reflect on the remarkable individuals and international collaborators whose commitment to cultural exchange has shaped its mission, using music and the arts as instruments of dialogue and understanding.

At the heart of this legacy stands a commitment to artistic voices that carry distinctive cultural identities across borders. Kinan Azmeh, the Grammy Award-winning Syrian clarinettist and composer, exemplifies this philosophy. His contributions to ADMAF’s cultural diplomacy initiatives have demonstrated how a musician’s voice can affirm heritage whilst creating space for genuine international conversation. Through performances with the Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra across Europe, supported by the Abu Dhabi Festival, Azmeh has embodied the foundation’s belief that artists deserve platforms regardless of where they originate, and that their work enriches the world precisely because of its distinctive cultural roots.

This approach to cultural collaboration reflects a deeper understanding of what art can achieve. Rather than seeking to homogenise or assimilate artistic voices, ADMAF has consistently worked to amplify them. By supporting artists across borders and facilitating meaningful exchange, the foundation has created a model in which cultural difference becomes a source of strength rather than division. Music, after all, is uniquely capable of creating these spaces for dialogue, moments where listeners from different backgrounds encounter perspectives and experiences that might otherwise remain distant.

As ADMAF marks three decades of this work, it does so with the knowledge that the most profound diplomatic achievement is not a treaty or an agreement, but rather the quiet moment when someone hears music from a culture not their own and finds in it something universally human. That is the achievement being celebrated through ADMAF30: not the number of performances or collaborations, impressive as those may be, but the principle that distinctive artistic identities have intrinsic value, and that supporting them across international boundaries is not merely cultural work, it is the work of building a more connected and understanding world.
