National Human Rights Institution Examines Housing Standards at Al Raha Village

A comprehensive review of residential facilities and worker welfare has been undertaken by the NHRI, underscoring the UAE's commitment to safeguarding dignity and ensuring compliance with international human rights conventions.

The National Human Rights Institution has conducted a detailed examination of housing standards and worker welfare provisions at Al Raha Village staff accommodation in Abu Dhabi’s Al Mafraq area, demonstrating the nation’s unwavering dedication to upholding human rights principles and promoting social wellbeing.

Led by Dr. Salem Suhail Al-Neyadi, Chairperson of the NHRI, the field visit formed part of a comprehensive assessment undertaken in conjunction with a formal contribution submitted to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing. The inspection sought to evaluate the calibre of services extended to residents across multiple dimensions of residential life, encompassing accommodation quality, public safety protocols, healthcare accessibility and food safety standards.

The delegation’s remit extended to reviewing the preparedness and efficacy of emergency response systems, reflecting a holistic approach to enhancing quality of life and ensuring workers can fully exercise their right to adequate housing whilst maintaining their dignity and contributing meaningfully to national development.

A distinguished multi-agency delegation accompanied the NHRI, comprising representatives from the Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre – Abu Dhabi, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, and the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Authority, alongside specialised technical personnel from the NHRI itself. This coordinated approach underscores the nation’s integrated commitment to worker welfare across regulatory, health and security domains.

During the comprehensive facility tour, inspectors assessed residential amenities, examined compliance with stringent safety requirements, evaluated healthcare and food service provisions, and appraised emergency preparedness arrangements. The visit emphasised strengthening coordination amongst relevant authorities to cultivate and maintain exemplary residential environments.

Dr. Al-Neyadi articulated that guaranteeing the right to adequate housing constitutes a cornerstone of human dignity preservation and social justice advancement, principles enshrined within national legislation and ratified international conventions. He underscored that monitoring workers’ living and working conditions remains central to the NHRI’s field priorities, advancing best practices that position the UAE’s working and residential environments as a distinguished exemplar of human rights protection and sustainable social progress.

The distinguished chairman commended the collaborative efforts of Al Raha Village management and all participating entities in their commitment to implementing the highest quality standards and responding with responsiveness to workers’ requirements, thereby reinforcing their stability and supporting their essential contributions to the nation’s continued development.
