NHRI Establishes Committees to Strengthen Human Rights Oversight
The National Human Rights Institution's Board of Trustees has approved two specialised standing committees to enhance organisational capacity and advance the UAE's human rights framework in line with international benchmarks.
The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) has taken a significant step in strengthening its institutional architecture through the establishment of two dedicated standing committees, announced during the third meeting of the Board of Trustees in its second term. The decision reflects a strategic commitment to advancing oversight capabilities and human rights promotion across the nation.
The first committee will concentrate on matters pertaining to rights and non-governmental organisations, positioning the NHRI to work more effectively with civil society actors. The second committee will oversee complaints management, monitoring activities and field visits, enhancing the Institution’s capacity to investigate concerns and conduct on-site assessments.
Chaired by Dr. Salem Suhail Al Neyadi, the meeting convened at NHRI headquarters in Abu Dhabi and brought together Board members representing government entities for their inaugural gathering in the current term. This inaugural assembly represents a significant moment in the Institution’s engagement with state stakeholders, pursuant to Federal Law No. (12) of 2021.
Beyond structural adjustments, the Board explored collaborative pathways with government representatives, seeking to deepen institutional coordination and facilitate the sharing of expertise on human rights matters. Such coordination proves essential for the NHRI to discharge its mandate effectively across the national human rights framework.
During the session, trustees also deliberated upon a suite of administrative measures designed to refine operational structures and reviewed both Board regulations and the Institution’s organisational framework. These comprehensive measures underscore the commitment to institutional excellence and rigorous governance standards.
The approvals affirm the NHRI’s unwavering dedication to fostering a rights-centred culture underpinned by institutional independence, operational efficiency and sustainable long-term impact. The restructuring aligns with international best practices whilst responding to the specific needs of the UAE’s human rights landscape.
