Nurturing Emirati Poetic Voices: The Poetry Generations Laboratory

We find ourselves at a remarkable moment in Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape, as the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre orchestrates an inspired initiative to cultivate and celebrate the poetic heritage of the Emirates. Through the thoughtfully conceived programme known as the Poetry Generations Laboratory, accomplished poets and specialists have convened to mentor and refine the talents of emerging Emirati voices in the distinguished tradition of vernacular poetry.
Three intensive workshops have been meticulously conducted in collaboration with the Culture Sector of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, providing a sophisticated forum within which nascent poets may develop their creative capabilities and artistic expression. The sessions, gracefully hosted at the esteemed Al Mowaijehi Palace in Al Ain, represent a nurturing environment where established practitioners share their profound knowledge with the next generation of poetic talent.
This endeavour culminates in an evening of verse, wherein the workshop participants shall present their work as part of the Poetry Nights programme, itself a treasured component of the Al Ain Book Festival 2026. The opportunity to perform within such a prestigious cultural context speaks to the calibre of the experience and the genuine commitment to fostering indigenous artistic expression within the Emirati tradition.
The initiative exemplifies Abu Dhabi’s broader commitment to preserving, celebrating and advancing the Arabic language and the rich cultural forms that have flourished within Emirati society. By bringing together mentors of distinction with talented young people, the Poetry Generations Laboratory ensures that the resonant voices of vernacular poetry shall continue to flourish for generations yet to come, rooted deeply in authentic cultural practice and nurtured through thoughtful institutional stewardship.
