Pale Oak on the Yacht Harbour: The Abu Dhabi EDITION

Al Bateen Marina occupies the quieter western flank of Abu Dhabi’s main island, a working yacht harbour with a promenade of restaurants and cafés along its edge, and The Abu Dhabi EDITION sits on it. The hotel looks out over the berths and the water rather than over a main road, which is a rarer arrangement in this city than the length of its coastline would suggest.

Emirates Palace and Etihad Towers are a short drive. The Corniche is ten minutes by car and Yas Island thirty, which puts the circuit within reach without putting the hotel inside the weekend it generates. Al Bateen Executive Airport is 15.6 kilometres away and Zayed International 34.5, and the first of those figures explains a noticeable share of the guest list.

The building and its palette

There is no gold here, no marble atrium and no water feature in the lobby. The palette is pale timber, white and stone, and the effect on arrival is closer to a private members’ club than to a Corniche tower.

The EDITION brand exists because Ian Schrager argued that the large hotel groups had forgotten how to make a hotel feel like a place rather than a product. Whatever one makes of the argument, the Abu Dhabi property is its clearest expression in the Gulf. The lobby was refurbished between June and August 2026, work confined to the public rooms, so those spaces are newly finished at the time of writing.

One hundred and ninety eight rooms, fifty seven residences

The property holds 198 guest rooms and suites alongside 57 branded serviced residences.

Rooms follow the brand template: uncluttered, with pale oak, white linen, floor to ceiling glazing, indulgent bedding and marble bathrooms with deep tubs. There is very little decoration, which is either the appeal or the objection depending entirely on the guest. Marina facing categories are the ones worth taking.

Fifty seven residences is a large proportion alongside 198 rooms, and it changes the character of the building. A meaningful share of the people in the lifts live here rather than visit, which gives the public rooms the settled feel of a residential block rather than the churn of a business hotel. The residences suit longer stays and have found their market among visiting executives and families relocating to the capital, who get a kitchen with a hotel operation behind it.

Six venues, from the Oak Room to the pool

The food and drink runs to six venues. Oak Room is the steakhouse. Alba Terrace handles Mediterranean cooking outdoors and works best through the cooler months. Market at EDITION serves breakfast all day, which is the detail worth knowing for anyone keeping irregular hours or arriving off a long flight. Lobby Bar and Library Bar carry the drinking as separate rooms with separate registers rather than one space relabelled at six o’clock, and Pool Bar works the terrace.

The programme leans social rather than formal, which is the brand’s signature, and the venues function as neighbourhood destinations for Abu Dhabi residents as much as facilities for guests. The marina promenade adds further independent options within a minute’s walk, so a stay of several nights need not repeat itself.

Spa, barber and a gym that never shuts

The outdoor pool and its terrace look out over the marina and the skyline beyond it.

Wellness is unusually well staffed for a hotel of 198 rooms. EDITION Spa carries the treatment menu, Rossano Ferretti Hair Spa handles hair, and Chaps and Co. runs the barbershop, which is a genuinely useful thing to find downstairs at eight in the morning. Three separate wellness operators under one roof is uncommon at this scale, and it means a guest can take a treatment, have their hair cut and have a shave without going outside. The fitness centre is open around the clock with cardiovascular machines and a full equipment floor.

This is a hotel rather than a resort and makes no pretence otherwise. There is no beach at the door, and a guest whose priority is sand will be happier on Saadiyat.

More than nine thousand square feet of events

Event space runs to more than 9,300 square feet across a set of venues styled to the same brief as the rest of the building. That is a serious allocation for a property of this room count, and it reflects how much of the hotel’s trade comes from the city rather than from its own guest list. The scale suits launches, private dinners and board level meetings rather than large conferences, and the design does a good deal of the work a conference hotel would otherwise have to do with flowers.

Parking is complimentary on site. Pets are not accommodated. The register throughout is adult and urban: families are looked after, and the residences work well for them, but the property’s centre of gravity sits with couples, business travellers and the marina crowd.

Against the neighbours

The comparison that matters is with the other hotels on this half of the island. The InterContinental, further along the same shore, runs 390 rooms across nineteen floors with nine restaurants and a private beach. Royal M by Gewan, on the same marina, offers six room categories in a richly finished regional idiom, an island beach club and pools on the roof. The EDITION holds 198 rooms and 57 residences, six venues and a pale timber lobby.

Take a marina facing room, and walk the promenade in the evening rather than eating in every night.
