Preserving the Nation’s Memory: Arab Document Day 2026

The National Library and Archives has illuminated the profound importance of documentary preservation through an elegant celebration of Arab Document Day 2026, an occasion devoted to honouring the extraordinary significance of archival materials in maintaining collective memory and cultural continuity across the Arab world.

This distinguished gathering brought together scholars and custodians of heritage to explore how documents serve as irreplaceable witnesses to national history, essential guardians of identity and rights, and vital conduits through which civilisational legacies are transmitted to future generations. The event featured a thoughtful address from His Excellency Dr Abdulla Majed Al Ali, Director General of the National Library and Archives and President of the Arab Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives.

A particularly resonant panel discussion, entitled “Family Documents: A Nation’s Memory and a Legacy for Generations,” examined the intimate connection between household records and the broader narrative of national identity. The dialogue explored how personal and familial documentation contributes meaningfully to our understanding of societal development and cultural evolution.

Complementing this intellectual discourse, a carefully curated historical exhibition presented rare photographs and archival documents that illustrate the UAE leadership’s unwavering commitment to strengthening family structures and community cohesion. The collection notably highlighted the foundational contributions of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in advancing familial welfare and fostering the bonds that unite society.

Through such endeavours, the National Library and Archives reaffirms its sacred mission to preserve the nation’s collective memory, safeguarding documentary treasures as authoritative sources of knowledge and enduring testimonies to the UAE’s rich history and civilisational heritage. In this role, the institution serves as guardian of the past and steward of the legacy we entrust to those who follow.
