Sharjah Airport charts ambitious expansion as it reconnects with global travel markets

The airport authority presents its transformative infrastructure plans at World Travel Market London, positioning the emirate as a gateway to international destinations and commerce

The Sharjah Airport Authority is preparing to showcase its evolution on one of the world’s most significant stages for travel and tourism. At World Travel Market London, held from 3rd to 5th November at ExCeL in the United Kingdom, the authority will present an ambitious portfolio of expansion projects worth AED2.4 billion, marking a significant moment in the airport’s trajectory as a regional aviation hub.

Ali Salim Al Midfa, Chairman of the Sharjah Airport Authority, underscores the significance of the moment. The airport’s participation reflects a broader vision of integrating infrastructure development with international partnership building. These expansion plans aim to increase the airport’s capacity to accommodate more than 25 million passengers annually by the end of 2027, enhancing both operational efficiency and the quality of service that travellers and airlines have come to expect.

The numbers tell a compelling story. In the first nine months of 2026 alone, Sharjah Airport welcomed 11.6 million passengers, building on momentum from the previous year when the airport processed approximately 19.48 million travellers, a growth of 13.9 percent. The airport now serves more than 100 destinations worldwide, a testament to its expanding role in supporting tourism, trade and air connectivity across international markets.

For more than two decades, Sharjah Airport Authority has maintained a presence at World Travel Market London, using the platform to strengthen relationships with airlines, tour operators and tourism partners. As we reported in earlier engagement, the airport continues advancing its commitment to global aviation innovation and operational excellence, participating in major industry gatherings to exchange expertise and explore emerging markets.

Al Midfa describes the London event as particularly significant in today’s travel landscape. It provides an opportunity to keep pace with demand trends and the shifting dynamics of the travel industry, whilst opening broader prospects for cooperation and building partnerships that will strengthen air connectivity and expand the airport’s international presence.

The backdrop to this participation is equally noteworthy. Sharjah is presenting its cultural richness and natural beauty to Europe’s leading travel professionals at the same event, creating a unified narrative about the emirate’s appeal as a destination and a business hub. This coordinated approach reflects the integrated vision of the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority.

The expansion projects represent more than mere capacity increases. They signal Sharjah’s determination to position itself as a gateway for travellers and cargo moving through the Gulf region, whilst maintaining the service standards and operational excellence that underpin trust in aviation.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Sharjah Airport’s growth strengthens the broader narrative of the United Arab Emirates as a connected, thriving region. As a neighbouring emirate, Sharjah’s enhanced air connectivity and increased passenger capacity contribute to the overall accessibility and appeal of the UAE as a destination for international travel and commerce. The expansion projects demonstrate the confidence of the region’s aviation authorities in future demand and their commitment to infrastructure that serves the wider economy.

The airport’s trajectory also reflects the UAE’s strategic positioning in global travel and trade networks. With more than 100 destinations served and ambitious expansion plans underway, Sharjah Airport plays a vital role in supporting the region’s tourism, business and cultural initiatives, reinforcing the UAE’s place as a significant hub in international aviation.
