SEWA deploys modern metering technology and upgrades digital infrastructure across the emirate to support growing urban demand
The transformation of Sharjah’s electricity infrastructure continues at pace. In the third quarter of 2026, the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority installed more than 3,200 new electricity meters and replaced 1,600 older mechanical devices with modern smart alternatives, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to technological advancement and service excellence.
The installations, carried out by SEWA’s Electricity Distribution Department, respond to the energy demands created by Sharjah’s sustained urban and residential expansion. The shift to high-accuracy smart devices represents more than a simple upgrade: it promises improved measurement precision, enhanced customer experience and more reliable data transmission across the network.
Beyond the meters themselves, SEWA undertook comprehensive digital enhancement work. The authority updated geographic information systems data for 9,337 projects, enabling more accurate network route planning and faster maintenance operations. Field teams benefit from these improvements through swifter response capabilities. The authority also furnished 7,459 logistical support services to projects during the same period.
Ahmed Al Bass, Deputy Director of SEWA’s Electricity Distribution Department, characterised these measures as integral to a broader strategic vision. The initiatives support more effective resource management and the delivery of integrated, sustainable services. This work follows SEWA’s connection of 898 electricity projects in Q3 2026, which extended networks by 99 kilometres across the emirate.
The commitment to infrastructure advancement extends across multiple domains. As part of its comprehensive modernisation programme, SEWA commissioned two new 33 kV substations in October 2026, with fifteen additional facilities advancing through development stages. These parallel efforts demonstrate a coordinated approach to meeting the emirate’s evolving energy landscape.
SEWA has reaffirmed its commitment to continuing network development and regularly updating digital systems. The authority maintains its focus on ensuring high standards of quality and safety in electricity and related services for all citizens and residents of Sharjah.
What it means for Abu Dhabi
Sharjah’s infrastructure advancement reflects a broader pattern of technological investment across the United Arab Emirates. The modernisation of metering systems and digital networks demonstrates how the Emirates’ utilities are adopting sophisticated solutions to manage rapid urban growth and rising energy consumption.
For residents and businesses in Sharjah, these upgrades translate to more accurate billing, improved service reliability and faster response to network issues. The investment in geographic information systems and logistical support infrastructure ensures that the authority can maintain pace with ongoing development while sustaining service quality across the expanding emirate.
