A four-day celebration of visual storytelling brings together more than 70 international artists and industry experts for an expanded platform uniting animation and comics, featuring masterclasses, exhibitions and keynote addresses from acclaimed international practitioners.
H.H. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority, has inaugurated the fourth edition of the Sharjah Animation and Comics Conference at Aljada in Sharjah, marking an occasion of considerable significance for the region’s creative industries. The four-day event, running until 25th October, convenes more than seventy international artists, creators and industry experts in a comprehensive programme encompassing over one hundred and fifty activities.
This year’s expanded edition represents a notable development in bringing animation and comics together on a unified platform, thereby fostering meaningful connections between regional talent and established international industry expertise. The conference offers abundant opportunities for professional development, collaborative endeavours, co-production partnerships and access to global markets, positioning the Sharjah initiative as a considerable gateway for emerging creators seeking to elevate their work to international audiences.
Prior to the opening ceremony, H.H. Sheikha Bodour undertook a comprehensive tour of the conference, visiting the Princesses and Heroes exhibition, which showcases more than one hundred original and historic drawings from Disney’s most celebrated animated films. She also visited Arabesque, an exhibition celebrating Arab heritage and folklore through the contributions of fourteen contemporary artists, and experienced the interactive Dubbing Corner, offering an illuminating glimpse into voice acting for animated characters.
Khoula Al Mujaini, Executive Director of the conference, articulated the event’s significance in building upon the distinguished cultural vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. She emphasised that the guidance of H.H. Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi has been instrumental in expanding opportunities within publishing and enabling creators to develop their work for increasingly wider audiences.
The opening ceremony featured keynote addresses from Doug Sweetland, an accomplished animator and director whose work includes Pixar’s Toy Story and the Oscar-nominated animated short Presto, and Bernard Chang, a distinguished comic book artist whose portfolio encompasses acclaimed titles from Marvel and DC Comics. Both speakers underscored the transformative potential of such platforms in connecting emerging artists with seasoned professionals, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and enabling regional storytellers to reach global audiences.
The conference programme encompasses two principal tracks. The Animation track explores the complete production process, encompassing concept development, scriptwriting, character design, storyboarding, traditional and digital animation techniques, stop motion methodology, voice acting and cutting-edge production technologies. The Comics track focuses upon illustration, character design, world-building and visual storytelling, alongside opportunities for adapting narratives and characters into films, animations and emerging digital platforms.
Masterclasses conducted by professionals behind internationally acclaimed productions offer emerging talent invaluable insights into industry practices, whilst hands-on workshops explore the sophisticated tools and techniques employed within professional studios. The programme additionally features live demonstrations of drawing, animation and character design, voice acting experiences and film screenings, providing participants and visitors with a comprehensive understanding of how animated stories and characters are brought to life for audiences worldwide.
