The Enduring Legacy of Ancient Games: From Pachisi to the Modern World

The Enduring Legacy of Ancient Games: From Pachisi to the Modern World

For more than fifteen centuries, the ancient game of Pachisi has united players around its distinctive cross shaped board, offering a window into the sophisticated entertainments of the Indian subcontinent. Originating in India, this remarkable game invited four players to race their pieces across the board, employing either dice or cowrie shells to determine the trajectory of their moves, each throw governed by chance and strategy in equal measure.

The nomenclature of this venerable game offers its own fascination, derived most probably from the Hindi word signifying twenty five, the highest numerical score a player could achieve through a single throw. Such linguistic precision reflects the considered design that characterised the game’s conception.

The profound appeal of Pachisi resonated with such intensity that the illustrious Mughal emperor Akbar, recognising its cultural significance, commissioned a life sized version to be constructed within the precincts of his palace, elevating the game from intimate domestic diversion to grand ceremonial spectacle. This imperial patronage speaks eloquently to the esteem in which the game was held throughout the subcontinent.

The influence of Pachisi transcended temporal and geographical boundaries. Centuries after its creation in the courts and homes of India, its essence travelled far beyond its birthplace, ultimately inspiring the modern game of Ludo, which continues to engage and entertain millions of enthusiasts throughout the world to this present day.

The Children’s Museum at Louvre Abu Dhabi now invites guests to embark upon a captivating expedition through this remarkable cultural heritage. The exhibition A Board Game Adventure presents the fascinating narratives woven through the ages of play, allowing visitors to comprehend how ancient games have shaped the diversions we treasure today, and to appreciate the timeless human impulse toward competition, creativity and collective joy.
