The Language of Culture: How the UAE Speaks to the World Through Art

There exists a language that transcends words, one that moves across borders and cultures with the grace of a brushstroke or the intention embedded in sculpted form. This is the language of arts and culture, and it has become central to how nations engage with one another, foster understanding and strengthen the bonds that hold our world together.

On 20 October, this profound conversation came into sharp focus when H.E. Dr. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, H.E. Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo and Isobel Abulhoul gathered for a discussion titled A Nation in Dialogue: Arts, Culture & the UAE’s Global Engagement. Moderated by Salem Brahimi, the session explored the intricate ways in which cultural expression connects communities, builds bridges of mutual understanding and strengthens international relations.

Presented in collaboration with Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy as part of Riwaq Al Fikr, the Abu Dhabi Museum of Art and Abu Dhabi Festival’s series of intellectually rigorous talks, the conversation considered how the arts operate as instruments of connection and meaning making on the global stage.

Following the discussion, an exhibition titled When Art Creates Space for Diplomacy offered a tangible expression of these ideas. The show featured sculptural works drawn from the ADMAF Art Collection, bringing together pieces by Emirati, Arab and international artists. Through these three dimensional forms and compositions, visitors encountered art as a language of its own, each work a statement about creativity, cultural identity and the universal human desire to communicate across difference.

The pairing of conversation and exhibition spoke to something essential: that culture does not merely reflect a nation’s character, it actively shapes how the world perceives and engages with it. In the hands of artists and the minds of thinkers, culture becomes diplomacy of the most graceful and enduring kind.
