The Stories Held in Ordinary Things

READY
Read by Emma, the Simply Abu Dhabi narrator.
There exists a peculiar alchemy in the way ordinary objects speak across centuries. A fragment of pottery, a tool worn smooth by use, a bead threaded onto cord – these humble things hold within them the narratives of those who came before, waiting to be understood anew. Everyday Artifacts, created by Noora Jabir and Moufida Mohideen, invites us into this conversation between past and present, between archaeological fact and living memory.
The exhibition draws its material and inspiration from Tell Abraq, a prehistoric site whose layers of earth contain the tangible evidence of ancient life. Rather than treating these objects as museum specimens to be sealed behind glass, the artists engage them as active participants in the telling of our cultural story. The work examines how archaeological interpretation, combined with the wisdom of local knowledge and the visual language of contemporary art, together reshape how we comprehend heritage.
Developed under the mentorship of Professor Uzma Z. Rizvi, Everyday Artifacts exemplifies the transformative power of interdisciplinary thinking. It demonstrates how the rigorous methods of archaeology, the lived experience of communities, and the imaginative possibilities of artistic practice need not remain in separate spheres. Instead, they converge to offer us a more nuanced and layered understanding of who we were and, by extension, who we are.
The exhibition will be on public display from 3 to 8 November 2026 at Dubai Design Week, offering visitors the opportunity to witness this compelling reimagining of heritage through a distinctly contemporary sensibility.
