Three Infinity Pools and a Nesting Beach: Jumeirah Saadiyat Island

Two hundred and ninety three rooms, suites and villas are laid along a single stretch of Saadiyat’s eastern shore, and the way that figure is distributed matters more than the figure itself. The building runs long and low rather than upward, entry level rooms come in at close to fifty square metres with balconies, and the orientation never varies: floor to ceiling glazing facing the Gulf, so water is visible from almost every interior space on the site. The resort holds one Michelin Key.

The count also sets the resort apart within its own district. Saadiyat Rotana carries three hundred and forty keys and Rixos Premium three hundred, both of them closer to the bridge. Jumeirah took a smaller number and gave it a longer beach.

A Michelin Key is awarded to a hotel rather than to a restaurant inside it, and it is the guide’s assessment of the property as a whole. That is the useful thing to understand about the one this resort holds.

The eastern end of the island

The resort occupies a stretch of Saadiyat’s eastern beach further out than any of its neighbours, which puts a few more minutes of road between the front door and the city and a great deal more open sand in front of the loungers. Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is adjacent. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is roughly ten minutes away by car, and the cultural district around it continues to grow year on year.

The distance is the reason to book. Guests who want the museums within easy reach and the beach reading as coastline rather than as hotel frontage get both here, and the trade is a slightly longer drive to the Corniche. For most visitors the museums are why Saadiyat is on the itinerary at all, and from here they are an afternoon rather than an excursion.

Nesting season, and the rules that come with it

The beach is a protected hawksbill turtle nesting site. The resort operates inside that constraint rather than around it, with lighting restrictions along the shore and seasonal protocols in force during the nesting months. Guests staying between spring and early summer can see the process at close quarters, under supervision and at a distance that does not disturb the animals.

It is a genuinely unusual thing for a hotel to be able to offer, and it is the detail that most often decides the booking for guests choosing between the Saadiyat properties on the strength of the beach alone.

Fifty square metres and upward

Accommodation begins at close to fifty square metres. Interiors are contemporary and noticeably more relaxed than the brand’s Dubai flagships, worked in a palette of sand, bleached timber and white, with the glazing doing most of the decorative work.

Every category faces either the water or the gardens behind it, and the glazing runs from floor to ceiling throughout, which is why the interiors need so little decoration to hold a room together.

Suites add living space and better sightlines. The villas sit closest to the water and carry private pools and private terraces, and they are the category worth the money here, both for the pool and for the position on the sand. On a beach where lighting is restricted after dark during the nesting months, a private terrace is a more valuable thing than it would be elsewhere.

Seven kitchens, and one of them takes bookings from the city

Nine venues are listed on the property, of which seven are trading: Sal, White, Mare Mare, Tean, the Pool Bar, Majlis Saadiyat and The Lounge. Atelier 180 and Offside Gastropub are temporarily closed. The programme leans towards seafood and the Mediterranean rather than attempting to cover every cuisine, which suits both the setting and the length of stay most guests book.

Tean is the strongest of them, a Lebanese and Mediterranean kitchen that Abu Dhabi residents book for themselves rather than only when staying. That is the useful test of a hotel restaurant. Sal, White and Mare Mare complete the restaurant list, Majlis Saadiyat and The Lounge handle the lighter ends of the day, and the Pool Bar serves the water. Anyone booking partly for a particular table should check the status of the two closed venues before travelling.

A hotel restaurant that residents book on a Thursday evening is doing something a guest count cannot show. Tean is on that list.

Three pools, a Turkish bath and the golf next door

Three infinity pools step down towards the sand, arranged so that the water appears continuous with the Gulf beyond. Beach service is full, with loungers, umbrellas and food and drink brought to the sand.

The spa is substantially equipped, with a Turkish bath and sauna alongside the treatment menu and a full hydrothermal circuit for guests who want the circuit rather than the treatment. Tennis courts, a health club and beach yoga complete the wellness offer, and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club next door handles anything more strenuous.

Families, and the scale of the sand

A children’s club, a children’s pool and a playground make the resort workable for families without turning it into a children’s resort. The length of the beach is what makes that balance hold: families and couples are rarely competing for the same square metre of sand, which is not true of every property on the island.

Meetings and events

Event space is competent rather than a reason to travel. The property works best for incentive groups and small conferences that want the beach and the turtle programme to be the story, and less well for large conference business, which is better served on Yas Island.

Where it sits on Saadiyat

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas sit closer to the bridge and to one another. Saadiyat Rotana and Rixos Premium put their money into water parks and inclusive rates. Jumeirah went the other way, east and quiet, and spent it on the sand and the glass.

Come between spring and early summer if the turtles matter to you, book a villa if they do not, and eat at Tean either way.
