TRENDS Global charts course for Arab-German research collaboration

Bridging academic inquiry with pragmatic solutions, a senior researcher from the Emirati institution outlines a vision for strengthened knowledge partnerships between the Arab world and Germany.
The pursuit of meaningful research cooperation between Arab and German institutions took tangible form at the Arab German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities conference in Bonn, where TRENDS Global participated as guest of honour. The gathering, part of a longstanding commitment to cross-cultural academic exchange, provided a forum for exploring the contours of collaboration that might shape the coming years.
Ali Abdullah Al Ali, Senior Researcher at TRENDS Research & Advisory, articulated three foundational areas upon which future partnerships might flourish. The first encompasses joint exploration of pressing global concerns, particularly artificial intelligence and the intricate geopolitical developments that define our contemporary moment. The second emphasises a crucial translation: transforming theoretical research into practical knowledge that serves those who shape policy and guide institutions. The third rests on a commitment to durability, building partnerships that extend beyond individual projects into sustained academic and knowledge-based endeavours.
The researcher underscored a philosophy that animates much of contemporary research thinking: that ideas possess value only when they crystallise into tangible outcomes, when knowledge becomes the foundation for institutional advancement and societal benefit. This pragmatic approach, rooted in intellectual rigour yet oriented toward real-world application, offers a model for how academic communities might contribute to their societies.
Looking toward 2040, Al Ali expressed an aspiration for Arab-German research cooperation to deepen and broaden, becoming increasingly interwoven in its mechanisms and ambitions. The vision extends beyond the mechanics of collaboration to something more ambitious: the shared application of knowledge to the improvement of human life and experience. In an era when global challenges demand responses that transcend borders and disciplinary boundaries, such partnerships represent both opportunity and necessity.
