Two Musical Worlds Converge in an Evening of Transcendent Artistry

An evening of profound musical distinction unfolded recently as two distinct musical traditions converged in a celebration of artistic excellence at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi. The programme, entitled Harmony, brought together the UAE National Orchestra with oud virtuoso Naseer Shamma in an encounter that exemplified the graceful synthesis of musical worlds.
The centrepiece of the evening was the world premiere of Richard Dubugnon’s Double Concerto entitled Sands of Love, composed for cello and ney. The work was brought to luminous life through the performances of cellist Sary Khalifé and ney player Rami Ourabi, whilst conductor Ahmed Farag guided the ensemble with consummate artistry. This inaugural presentation of the composition represented a significant moment in the cultural calendar, uniting Western orchestral traditions with the profound resonance of instruments deeply rooted in the region’s musical heritage.
The convergence of Shamma’s masterful command of the oud with the orchestral ensemble created an atmosphere of remarkable cultural synthesis. Such occasions remind us of the transformative power of music as a universal language, transcending geographical and historical boundaries to create moments of shared understanding and aesthetic elevation.
The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi continues to establish itself as a venue of considerable distinction, fostering programmes that celebrate both the treasures of established musical traditions and the innovations of contemporary composition. The institution’s commitment to presenting work of intellectual and artistic substance ensures that Abu Dhabi’s cultural landscape remains vibrant and intellectually nourishing.
As the 2026/2027 season unfolds, the Centre invites guests to experience forthcoming programmes that promise similarly enriching encounters with the performing arts. Those wishing to secure their attendance are invited to reserve their seating for upcoming performances.
