UAE and Palau Chart Course for Strengthened Partnership on Sustainability and Development

UAE and Palau Chart Course for Strengthened Partnership on Sustainability and Development

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomes the President of Palau to advance cooperation across renewable energy, water security and environmental stewardship in the Pacific region.

The Presidential Court in Abu Dhabi became the setting for a significant diplomatic engagement as His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan received His Excellency Surangel Whipps Jr, President of the Republic of Palau, on a working visit to the Emirates. The encounter brought together two leaders committed to deepening their nations’ relationship and addressing shared priorities on the global stage.

During their discussion, Sheikh Mohamed and President Whipps identified mutual opportunities for partnership across development, economic advancement, renewable energy and sustainability. The conversation reflected a shared vision for environmental stewardship, with both leaders recognising the interconnectedness of prosperity and ecological responsibility. Their exchange underscored a commitment to cooperation grounded in each nation’s aspirations and development pathways.

Particular attention was given to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which the UAE will host in December. The leaders acknowledged the conference’s significance as a platform for developing innovative responses to water security challenges and ensuring the long term sustainability of water resources, matters of profound importance to island nations and arid regions alike. This focus demonstrated alignment on one of the defining challenges of our time.

The bilateral conversation also encompassed cooperation between the UAE and the Pacific Islands Forum, for which the UAE holds the status of Strategic Partner. Both leaders recognised the forum’s role in strengthening ties between the Emirates and Palau, particularly in addressing climate change, advancing renewable energy technologies, and protecting marine ecosystems and freshwater resources. They reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with international partners to foster sustainable community development across the Pacific.

The meeting was attended by senior Emirati leadership, including H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi; H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs; and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Special Affairs, alongside other ministers and officials.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

This engagement reflects Abu Dhabi’s expanding diplomatic reach beyond traditional economic partnerships toward relationships centred on environmental innovation and sustainability. As host of December’s UN Water Conference, the UAE is positioning itself at the forefront of global dialogue on water security, and partnerships with Pacific Island nations amplify this leadership. The collaboration signals Abu Dhabi’s commitment to being a convener on climate action and renewable energy transition.

For the broader Emirati agenda, the meeting demonstrates how development cooperation and environmental stewardship are increasingly intertwined in the nation’s international relations. As the UAE continues to strengthen its role in global forums, engagements of this kind contribute to Abu Dhabi’s influence in shaping sustainable solutions that benefit island communities and arid regions. The renewed focus on renewable energy and marine ecosystem protection also aligns with the Emirates’ own Vision 2030 priorities.
