UAE Attorney-General launches formal investigation into flydubai flight diversion

Counsellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has ordered a specialised investigation team to examine circumstances surrounding the diversion of flydubai flight FZ1073 to Saudi Arabia, with authorities working to establish facts and rule out any links to terrorist activity.

The Attorney-General of the United Arab Emirates has initiated a comprehensive investigation into an incident aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, which was diverted to Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after departing from Dubai International Airport.

Counsellor Dr. Hamad Saif Al Shamsi has established a specialised investigation team within the Public Prosecution to examine the circumstances surrounding the flight’s diversion. According to flydubai’s statement, an altercation took place in the flight deck during the journey, prompting crew members aboard the aircraft to intervene and secure operations.

The investigation is being conducted in close coordination with the General Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant UAE authorities. Investigators have been directed to undertake comprehensive fact-finding efforts, including gathering all pertinent information and evidence, establishing precise circumstances, and identifying the motivations behind the incident. Particular attention is being given to determining whether the occurrence was linked to any terrorist activity or purpose, or involved prior planning or coordination.

Dr. Al Shamsi has emphasised that all necessary measures are being implemented to conduct a thorough and systematic inquiry. He has called upon the public to exercise restraint in discussing the matter, requesting that citizens and residents refrain from speculation or sharing unverified information whilst competent authorities complete their investigative work.

The Attorney-General underscored the importance of allowing the investigation to proceed without premature conclusions, and stressed that official communications should remain the sole reliable source of information regarding the incident. This measured approach reflects the commitment to establishing a clear factual record before any formal determinations are made.

Under UAE legislation, the judicial authorities possess full jurisdiction to investigate the incident, given that the aircraft is registered in the Emirates and operates under the UAE flag. Consequently, UAE law applies to any offences committed aboard the aircraft, regardless of whether they occur within or beyond national territory.
