UAE Banking Leadership Appointed to Swift Supervisory Board, Reinforcing Global Financial Standing

The United Arab Emirates Banks Federation representative's selection to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication's governing body underscores the nation's pivotal role in shaping the future of international payments and financial infrastructure.

The appointment of Ahmed Abdelaal, Group Chief Executive Officer of Mashreq and member of the UAE Banks Federation’s CEO Advisory Council, to the Supervisory Board of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication represents a significant recognition of the United Arab Emirates’ standing within the global financial community. This selection follows Swift’s evolution of its governance model, establishing a new 15-member Supervisory Board designed to guide the institution’s strategic direction in alignment with the priorities of the international financial sector.

The significance of this appointment extends beyond mere representation. The UAE stands alone as the sole nation from which a new representative has been appointed to the Supervisory Board, and remains the only country in the Middle East and Africa with representation on this governing body. This distinction reflects the nation’s substantial contributions to the advancement of payments infrastructure and its commitment to strengthening governance frameworks at local, regional and global levels.

AbdulAziz Al-Ghurair, Chairman of the UAE Banks Federation, expressed the institution’s pride in this recognition, noting that the Supervisory Board serves as a cornerstone for effective governance at an organisation that facilitates secure financial communication and information exchange for more than 12,500 financial institutions across more than 200 markets worldwide. He emphasised that as global economic conditions evolve rapidly, the importance of secure, efficient and reliable payments mechanisms becomes increasingly critical to international commerce.

The newly constituted Supervisory Board brings together distinguished leaders and independent members from the global banking, payments, securities, market infrastructure, technology, risk management and corporate governance sectors. This diverse composition equips the Board to address significant industry developments, including the emergence of post-quantum cryptography and frontier artificial intelligence technologies, which will fundamentally influence the operational resilience and cybersecurity frameworks of international financial systems.

The appointment reflects broader achievements by the UAE in establishing itself as a centre of financial excellence and technological innovation. Under the supervision of the Central Bank of the UAE, the nation has developed comprehensive frameworks supporting advanced payment solutions whilst maintaining rigorous compliance with local and international regulations. These efforts align with the National Payment Systems Strategy, launched in 2019 to foster innovative payment solutions and enhance customer experience across the banking sector.

Further testament to the UAE’s leadership in this domain comes through Swift’s selection of Dubai to host the SIBOS 2029 Conference and Exhibition. Held annually since 1978 in major global financial centres selected from numerous competing destinations, SIBOS represents one of the world’s most prominent gatherings for leaders of financial institutions, international organisations and technology providers. The UAE becomes the only nation in the Middle East to host this prestigious event twice, having previously welcomed SIBOS in 2013.

The UAE established the Swift Steering Committee and National Swift User Group in 2021, marking the first such initiative in the Middle East and North Africa region. This platform has played an instrumental role in improving payment operation performance and enhancing the security of bank transfer systems. Complementing these efforts, the Swift Users Training Centre, established in 2022 and operating under the UAE Banks Federation, serves as the first dedicated Swift training facility in the Middle East, providing certification courses for network users from member institutions.
