UAE Date Palm Cultivation Flourishes Across China's Diverse Regions

Emirati date palm varieties have successfully expanded beyond coastal areas to thrive in China's inland provinces, marking a significant milestone in agricultural cooperation between the two nations.

The cultivation of date palms from the United Arab Emirates continues to advance across China, with the recent harvest season demonstrating the viability of Emirati varieties in diverse climatic zones throughout the country.

This year’s harvest season concluded simultaneously across three significant cultivation bases: Wenchang City in Hainan Province, Yuanjiang County in Yunnan Province, and Panzhihua City in Sichuan Province. The milestone marks the first occasion on which UAE date palms have produced substantial quantities of fruit in China’s inland regions, building upon the initial success achieved in Wenchang during 2025.

The Wenchang base demonstrated continued success, with eight date palm varieties producing fruit once more. Meanwhile, the Yuanjiang base witnessed a significant breakthrough, as 52 palms bore fruit for the first time, whilst the Panzhihua base achieved an equally impressive result with 125 palms fruiting in their inaugural season.

This agricultural partnership traces its origins to 2019, when the UAE pledged to donate 100,000 date palm seedlings to support China’s cultivation initiatives. The inaugural shipment of 1,500 seedlings arrived in 2021, establishing an exceptional survival rate of approximately 93 per cent. A subsequent delivery of 23,500 seedlings reinforced the commitment to strengthening bilateral agricultural cooperation and advancing scientific and technical collaboration. These exchanges have proven instrumental in enhancing food security and economic development for both nations whilst diversifying China’s agricultural landscape.

The expansion reflects the successful identification of suitable climate zones across China. Following initial cultivation in Wenchang, the programme has extended throughout Hainan Province and now encompasses inland regions characterised by dry-hot valley conditions. Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces have emerged as particularly promising territories for this expansion.

The Yuanjiang County base, established in October 2024 across two hectares, represents a dedicated experimental facility. Planted with nine varieties of UAE-sourced date palm seedlings, the base has already generated valuable insights into cultivating date palms within China’s distinctive dry-hot valley environments.

In Sichuan Province, a China-UAE collaborative experimental base was established in June 2025 across more than four hectares, accommodating 942 palms representing nine varieties. Remarkably, just one year following planting, 125 palms achieved fruiting, demonstrating the exceptional adaptability and vigour of these Emirati cultivars in new environments.
