Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center Illuminates Snow Leopard Conservation Through Expert Dialogue

A compelling Science Talk explored the intricate relationship between snow leopards and indigenous communities, advancing understanding of ethical conservation practices in high-altitude Asia.

Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center, the region’s foremost institution dedicated to marine research, rescue and rehabilitation, hosted an illuminating Science Talk that ventured beyond coastal waters to examine the plight of snow leopards in their remote mountain habitats.

Titled Walking with Snow Leopards and Indigenous Peoples of High Asia, the complimentary session was presented in collaboration with the Mohamed Bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund. The evening brought together distinguished conservation leaders and community members to explore the delicate ecology of these elusive big cats, the complex dynamics between wildlife and human communities, and innovative community-led approaches that foster genuine coexistence rather than mere conflict mitigation.

Dr. Munir Virani, Chief Executive Officer of the Mohamed Bin Zayed Raptor Conservation Fund, opened the proceedings with remarks underscoring the broader significance of the discussion. The presentation featured Dr. Charudutt “Charu” Mishra, Executive Director of the International Snow Leopard Trust and Secretary-General of the Ethical Conservation Alliance, who drew upon decades of pioneering fieldwork across high-altitude ecosystems.

Dr. Mishra’s presentation emphasised a vital principle at the heart of modern conservation: the integration of rigorous scientific inquiry with profound respect for indigenous knowledge systems. His insights illuminated how understanding snow leopard behaviour, ecosystem dynamics and climate change impacts must be accompanied by genuine empathy and fairness towards the indigenous peoples and local communities whose ancestral lands these magnificent creatures inhabit. This holistic approach recognises that lasting conservation success depends upon honouring the dignity, rights and cultural heritage of those who have stewarded these ecosystems for generations.

Since its inception in 2023, the Science Talk series has become a cornerstone of Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center’s commitment to community education and knowledge exchange. The initiative has engaged more than 3,200 guests from across Abu Dhabi and beyond, fostering deeper understanding of conservation science and the natural heritage of the Arabian region and beyond.
