9th Emirates Family Medicine Society Congress Opens in Abu Dhabi

The prestigious three-day medical congress brings together 1,200 healthcare professionals and international experts to advance family medicine and primary healthcare across the region.

Abu Dhabi has welcomed the opening of the 9th Emirates Family Medicine Society Congress 2026, a significant gathering that convenes approximately 1,200 physicians and healthcare professionals alongside leading medical experts from 30 countries. Held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahyan at Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers from 8th to 10th October, the three-day event provides a vital platform for scientific exchange, professional development and international collaboration in family medicine and primary healthcare.

Sheikha Dr. Noura Khalid Saqr Al Qasimi, President of the Emirates Medical Association, delivered the opening address, emphasising the pivotal role of family medicine within contemporary healthcare systems. She noted that family physicians serve as the crucial first point of contact for patients, providing continuous care throughout all life stages. The timing of this congress holds particular significance, as 2026 marks the UAE’s designated Year of the Family, reflecting the nation’s leadership commitment to strengthening family wellbeing and social cohesion as foundations for a resilient society.

The congress programme encompasses more than 30 scientific sessions, lectures, panel discussions and workshops delivered by approximately 30 distinguished physicians and specialist speakers. The comprehensive agenda addresses a broad spectrum of clinical challenges encountered in everyday family medicine practice, including cardiovascular disease assessment, diabetes management, hypertension, metabolic health, respiratory conditions, neurological wellbeing and early detection protocols for age-related conditions. Additional focus areas encompass paediatric emergencies, mental health, dermatological concerns, musculoskeletal conditions and emerging therapeutic approaches to cardiometabolic health.

A highlight of the scientific programme includes a dedicated session titled “Unified Leadership, Stronger Communities: The Future of Family Medicine in the UAE”, which examines the evolving role of family medicine within the nation’s healthcare landscape. Further sessions explore lifestyle medicine and healthy longevity, evidence-based clinical practice, healthcare economics and management alongside specialised discussions on primary healthcare’s contribution to cardiometabolic wellbeing.

During the opening ceremony, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Bin Sultan Al Nahyan witnessed the signing of an agreement between Special Olympics UAE and the Emirates Family Medicine Society to provide medical support for People of Determination. The ceremony also featured awards honouring distinguished physicians and healthcare professionals across six categories: Academic and Educational Excellence, Best Scientific Research, Clinical Excellence, Community Engagement, Leadership and Recognition, and Digital Health Excellence.

Dr. Wadeia Mohammed Sharief, President of the Emirates Family Medicine Society and Congress Chair, articulated the event’s significance as a platform enabling professionals to exchange experiences and adopt best practices. She highlighted how this year’s congress, themed “Family and Longevity”, reflects the nation’s vision to advance healthcare excellence and strengthen the UAE’s position as a global destination for medical innovation.
