Strategic Deterrence and Partnership Essential to Middle East Security, Says Former US Secretary of State

At the Sixth TRENDS Annual Conference in Abu Dhabi, former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo emphasised that sustainable security in the region depends upon effective deterrence, robust defence capabilities and enduring strategic alliances.
The Sixth TRENDS Annual Conference 2026, held in Abu Dhabi under the thematic umbrella of “Sustainable Security: The Future of the Middle East Beyond the War”, provided the occasion for a significant strategic dialogue addressing the complexities of regional security architecture.
During a moderated conversation with CNN International’s Becky Anderson, former US Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo articulated a comprehensive vision for sustainable security in the Middle East, one grounded in effective deterrence, strengthened defence capabilities, enduring strategic partnerships and enhanced intelligence and technological cooperation.
Addressing the multifaceted challenges confronting the region, Pompeo emphasised that security frameworks must extend beyond conventional military considerations to encompass a sophisticated network of regional coordination. He underscored that effective deterrence necessitates addressing the financial and logistical support networks underlying armed groups operating in the region, whilst simultaneously raising the strategic costs of hostile behaviour through coordinated allied action.
On matters of international competition, Pompeo articulated that strategic rivalry between major powers across economic, technological, political and security domains would continue to define the international landscape for decades to come. He stressed the indispensable nature of sustained military presence in the Middle East, contending that strategic withdrawals risk creating security vacuums that may prove counterproductive to regional stability.
The former Secretary of State highlighted the United Arab Emirates and United States partnership as a particularly significant element of regional cooperation architecture. He emphasised that sustainable security ultimately depends upon multifaceted collaboration encompassing intelligence sharing, technological advancement, strengthened defence capabilities and long-term strategic coordination among trusted allies.
Pompeo’s remarks underscored the necessity of viewing regional security not as a series of isolated challenges but rather as an interconnected system requiring comprehensive, coordinated and sustained engagement from all stakeholders committed to stability, prosperity and the rule of law in the Middle East.
