UAE Federal National Council Engages in Gulf-European Parliamentary Dialogue

The FNC participated in preparatory discussions in Brussels ahead of a landmark meeting between GCC and European Parliament leadership, focusing on strategic partnership and regional cooperation.

A distinguished delegation from the United Arab Emirates Federal National Council participated in a meeting of the Gulf-European Parliamentary Committee in Brussels, engaging in substantive discussions alongside representatives from the legislative institutions of Gulf Cooperation Council member states. The gathering served as essential preparation for the second meeting between the Speakers of the Shura, Representatives, National and National Assembly councils of the GCC countries and the European Parliament, convened at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels on 16 October.

The committee’s deliberations encompassed a comprehensive range of topics of considerable significance to both regions. Central to the discussions was the imperative of strengthening the Gulf-European strategic partnership, with particular emphasis on developing economic and trade cooperation that might unlock mutual prosperity and commercial advancement. Participants engaged in thoughtful examination of security and stability considerations affecting the Gulf region, reflecting the shared commitment of both sides to fostering a secure and stable environment conducive to regional development.

Maritime security emerged as a particularly salient matter, with focused attention directed toward the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, recognising the profound implications these vital waterways hold for regional security architecture and the seamless flow of international trade. The discussions acknowledged the intricate interconnection between regional maritime stability and global economic interests, underscoring the necessity for coordinated approaches to ensuring safe passage and maritime governance.

Beyond these substantive policy matters, the committee explored avenues through which parliamentary diplomacy might be enhanced and leveraged as a powerful instrument for advancing dialogue and mutual understanding. Members discussed mechanisms for strengthening Gulf-European parliamentary cooperation, recognising the invaluable role that legislative institutions play in fostering meaningful exchange of expertise, ideas and perspectives between the two regions. These collaborative endeavours reflect a shared appreciation for the transformative potential of parliamentary engagement in bridging cultural and institutional divides.

The committee further devoted attention to the formulation of a joint statement anticipated to emerge from the forthcoming meeting, ensuring that the collective voice of GCC and European Parliament representatives would articulate shared commitments and mutual aspirations for continued cooperation and partnership.
