UAE’s Young Athletes Take the Global Stage at Dakar Youth Olympics

UAE's Young Athletes Take the Global Stage at Dakar Youth Olympics

Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi represented the UAE President at the opening of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, affirming the nation's commitment to nurturing the next generation of elite competitors.

The opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games unfolded beneath the evening sky at Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, where Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Vice President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, stood in representation of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The moment carried particular significance for a nation steadily building its cadre of young champions, each competition a stepping stone toward greater international standing.

The UAE has despatched twelve athletes to this continental gathering, seven young men and five young women competing across nine sports. Their presence reflects a deliberate strategy, one that extends far beyond a single Games. As the Minister explained, participation at such events affords emerging athletes invaluable exposure to international standards, allowing them to assess their technical capabilities and physical preparation whilst identifying the precise areas demanding refinement before they advance to more demanding stages of competition.

The Ministry of Sports, working in concert with the UAE National Olympic Committee and the nation’s sports federations, operates within the framework of the National Sports Strategy 2031. This coordinated approach seeks to widen the base of talent identification and development, beginning from the earliest stages of athletic maturation. The strategy recognises that sustained excellence at continental and Olympic levels requires a foundation laid years before, through systematic preparation and graduated exposure to competitive rigour. Recent governance advances have further strengthened coordination across the national sports system, creating the institutional conditions for such long term athlete development.

Dr. Al Falasi drew particular attention to the achievements of Emirati youth at the previous year’s Asian Youth Games in Bahrain, positioning those results not as an endpoint but as evidence of potential yet to be fully realised. The task now is to channel that momentum, to build upon demonstrated capability and construct a generation equipped to compete credibly at the highest levels of international sport.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

For Abu Dhabi and the UAE more broadly, the participation of young athletes at major international competitions serves multiple purposes. It fulfils an immediate competitive objective whilst simultaneously advancing the longer term human development goals embedded in the National Sports Strategy 2031. Each athlete who competes internationally returns with refined skills, expanded perspective and the psychological confidence that comes from testing oneself against the world’s best.

Beyond the athletes themselves, such participation signals the nation’s maturity as a sporting power. The UAE has evolved from a developing nation into a sophisticated hub of athletic excellence, one that invests in systematic athlete development, modern facilities and expert coaching. The presence of Emirati competitors at events like the Dakar Youth Olympics reinforces this trajectory, demonstrating that the foundations laid over recent years are beginning to bear fruit.
