UAE Expresses Firm Opposition to Tigray Escalation in Ethiopia
The Emirates has reiterated its unwavering support for Ethiopian sovereignty and called for immediate de-escalation following recent military developments in the Horn of Africa nation.
The United Arab Emirates has issued a forceful condemnation of recent military actions by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and associated armed groups operating against Ethiopian federal forces. The developments, which include the seizure of airports across the Tigray region and intensified military operations in the adjacent Afar and Amhara areas, represent a significant threat to Ethiopia’s territorial integrity and national stability, according to official statements.
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, delivered the UAE’s formal response, emphasising the country’s steadfast solidarity with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The Minister affirmed the Emirates’ resolute opposition to any efforts that seek to undermine Ethiopia’s constitutional framework through military means or armed conflict.
The UAE’s position underscores a broader commitment to supporting Ethiopia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity during this challenging period. The statement reflects concern regarding the potential ramifications of the conflict for regional security across the Horn of Africa, a strategically significant area with considerable importance to international stability.
Sheikh Shakhboot bin Nahyan Al Nahyan called urgently for an immediate cessation of all hostilities and the swift de-escalation of tensions between the parties. The Minister emphasised the paramount importance of safeguarding civilian populations from further violence and preserving humanitarian considerations during the conflict. The UAE reinforced the necessity of adherence to the Pretoria Peace Agreement, which represents a formal framework for conflict resolution agreed by the parties.
The Emirates has advocated for dialogue and peaceful resolution mechanisms as the most constructive path forward. Officials stressed that sustainable peace and stability in Ethiopia require commitment from all parties to pursue negotiated settlements rather than military solutions.
