Sharjah Press Club Elevates Journalistic Excellence Through Modern Media Training
A specialist workshop at the House of Wisdom equips media professionals with essential skills in fact-checking, storytelling and artificial intelligence, reflecting the emirate's commitment to advancing journalism standards.
Sharjah Press Club has organised a comprehensive training initiative designed to strengthen the capabilities of journalism professionals across the emirate. Held in cooperation with Sky News Arabia at the House of Wisdom, the workshop brought together SPC members and journalists to explore contemporary practices shaping the media landscape.
Titled “Modern Journalism: Fact-Checking, Storytelling and Artificial Intelligence”, the programme addressed the complete cycle of journalistic content creation. Participants engaged with methodologies for news monitoring and information verification, alongside advanced storytelling techniques that enable journalists to craft compelling narratives whilst maintaining editorial integrity.
The curriculum encompassed practical approaches to distinguishing credible sources from misinformation, a critical competency in today’s complex information environment. Journalists learned to evaluate content reliability, select appropriate editorial perspectives and produce stories that balance speed with accuracy—essential qualities in an era of rapid news cycles and breaking developments.
Tariq Saeed Allay, Director-General of the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, emphasised that professional development represents a cornerstone of sectoral growth. He noted that the media industry’s transformation demands journalists possess sophisticated technical knowledge and advanced editorial capabilities, enabling them to navigate diverse information sources responsibly whilst leveraging contemporary technological tools.
The workshop examined techniques for monitoring digital platforms and social media, identifying verified information and addressing misleading or contextually distorted content. Participants explored methods for constructing journalistic narratives—identifying central themes, developing compelling headlines and establishing coherent story structures grounded in evidence rather than speculation.
Breaking news coverage received particular attention, with sessions addressing editorial decision-making when information remains incomplete, interview preparation strategies and protocols for maintaining accuracy as situations evolve and fresh information emerges.
A significant component of the programme explored artificial intelligence applications within journalism, including research assistance, story development, content planning and information organisation. Participants were introduced to contemporary AI tools deployed in modern newsrooms, with emphasis placed upon critical evaluation of algorithmic outputs and the journalist’s essential role in maintaining editorial standards and professional oversight.
The workshop concluded with a practical exercise entitled “From News to Story”, which synthesised information gathering, verification protocols, editorial angle selection and concise journalistic composition. This applied methodology reflected the programme’s integration of theoretical knowledge with practical newsroom requirements.
The initiative exemplifies Sharjah Press Club’s broader mission to foster professional development amongst media workers and facilitate knowledge exchange within the sector, ensuring journalism professionals remain responsive to contemporary industry developments and evolving best practices.
