The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity has unveiled its 2027 judging committee, comprising five eminent leaders representing government, humanitarian service and ecclesiastical domains, with nations including Italy, Iraq, Lebanon and Kazakhstan represented among the panel for the first time.

The Zayed Award for Human Fraternity has announced the composition of its 2027 judging committee, bringing together five internationally distinguished figures to select the recipient or recipients of the award’s eighth edition. The panel will identify individuals and organisations from all backgrounds and nations who are advancing human fraternity and fostering peaceful coexistence.

The five committee members bring considerable experience across diplomatic, humanitarian and cultural spheres. They are Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, former President of Portugal; Barham Salih, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and former President of Iraq; Nehmat Aoun, First Lady of Lebanon; Maulen Ashimbayev, former Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan; and Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, President Emeritus of the Pontifical Council for Culture at the Holy See.

This year’s composition marks a significant expansion of international representation, with Italy, Iraq, Lebanon and Kazakhstan represented on the judging panel for the first time in the award’s history. The selection reflects the Award’s commitment to encompassing diverse perspectives and regions in recognising contributions to global fraternity and solidarity.

Established following the historic 2019 meeting in Abu Dhabi between Pope Francis and Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity honours the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Founding Father. The award celebrates his enduring humanitarianism and his commitment to assisting people irrespective of their background or geographical location.

The international and independent award carries a financial prize of US$1 million and seeks nominations of individuals and organisations advancing human fraternity and solidarity worldwide. Prospective nominees may submit applications before 31st October through the award’s official website at zayedaward.org.
