UAE Reaffirms Sustainable Development Commitment at AIIB's 11th Annual Meeting

The Emirates participated in the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank's gathering in Doha, underscoring its dedication to international cooperation and sustainable economic development across the region.

The United Arab Emirates has reiterated its commitment to sustainable development by participating in the 11th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), held in Doha, Qatar, under the theme “Tomorrow’s Infrastructure: Impact and Innovation.”

The gathering assembled governors, policymakers, development institutions, private sector leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on AIIB’s strategic direction as the institution advances into its second decade of operations. Since its establishment in 2016, AIIB has authorised funding exceeding US$76 billion across 384 projects, demonstrating its increasingly prominent position in financing infrastructure and fostering sustainable economic development throughout its member nations.

The discussions centred on expanding impact, reinforcing collaborative relationships and enhancing value delivery across the complete infrastructure project lifecycle.

Emirates Leadership on Global Development

Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) and Alternate Governor for the UAE at AIIB, emphasised the Bank’s pivotal role within the international development finance landscape. “AIIB has established an important role within the global development finance architecture, and its second decade presents an opportunity to build further on this foundation,” he stated.

Al Suwaidi highlighted that as infrastructure challenges grow increasingly multifaceted, enhanced partnerships, collaborative knowledge exchange and bespoke financing mechanisms will prove essential in converting development aspirations into enduring outcomes. “The UAE remains committed to advancing this shared agenda and strengthening international cooperation to support sustainable development,” he affirmed.

The Emirates’ participation underscores its sustained endeavours to fortify international partnerships, channel resources strategically and advance pragmatic approaches to collective development obstacles. Through engagement with multilateral organisations and global development forums, the UAE continues championing cooperation that channels shared priorities into measurable benefits for communities and economies across the world.

Future Focus on Water and Sanitation

This commitment to international cooperation and tangible action will be further demonstrated when Abu Dhabi hosts the 2026 United Nations Water Conference in December, jointly with Senegal from 8th to 10th December. The conference will prioritise accelerating implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 6, concentrating on water and sanitation challenges. It will convene nations and development partners to formulate innovative solutions and catalyse global action addressing critical water security issues.
