University of Sharjah Secures 38th Position in Global Sustainability Rankings for Tenth Consecutive Year

The institution maintains its pre-eminence among Middle Eastern universities in the UI GreenMetric 2026 rankings, which assessed over 2,000 institutions across 110 nations.
The University of Sharjah has reinforced its reputation as one of the world’s leading sustainability-focused institutions, retaining its position at number 38 globally in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings. The assessment, encompassing 2,016 universities from 110 countries, represents the largest iteration of this prestigious sustainability evaluation to date.
The university’s continued excellence extends across multiple dimensions of environmental stewardship. For the tenth consecutive year, it maintains the highest ranking among United Arab Emirates institutions, whilst also securing first place among universities throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council region and the Arab world. In a particularly distinguished achievement, the university ranked seventh globally amongst institutions established within the past fifty years.
The University of Sharjah’s performance in specific sustainability metrics reflects comprehensive institutional commitment. The institution achieved tenth place internationally in water management, twelfth in education and research initiatives, thirteenth in settings and infrastructure, and twenty-eighth in waste management—each indicator demonstrating systematic progress across critical environmental domains.
Prof. Esameldin Agamy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, emphasised that maintaining prominence within a ranking encompassing more than 2,000 institutions from 110 countries underscores that sustainability at the university transcends seasonal initiatives. Instead, it represents an integrated daily philosophy embedded within resource stewardship, academic programmes and scholarly endeavour.
The Chancellor noted that sustainability principles permeate the daily experience of the university community, manifesting across every institutional dimension. From sophisticated water and waste management systems to thoughtfully designed facilities and operational protocols, from laboratory environments to classroom settings and institutional activities, environmental responsibility remains central to the university’s identity and mission.
