ADFD Launches Dedicated Satellite Capacity with Orbitworks’ Altair Constellation
Abu Dhabi Fund for Development secures space-based monitoring capabilities to enhance oversight of its global development portfolio with AI-enabled Earth observation technology.
Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has marked a significant milestone in development finance innovation through the launch of its first dedicated satellite capacity via Orbitworks’ Altair constellation. This strategic advancement integrates sophisticated space-based capabilities into ADFD’s operational framework, enabling enhanced monitoring and oversight of projects spanning its extensive global portfolio.
The dedicated satellite capacity will substantially strengthen ADFD’s capacity to supervise and evaluate projects with heightened precision. By accessing near real-time, independent data, the organisation can now make more informed, evidence-based decisions regarding its development initiatives. This technological enhancement represents a meaningful evolution in how development finance institutions approach project accountability and impact measurement.
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, underscored the significance of this development: “The launch of our first dedicated satellite capacity marks a defining step in how we monitor and deliver development impact. Through its partnership with Orbitworks, ADFD has secured dedicated access within the Altair constellation, which comprises ten AI-enabled, multi-sensor satellites assembled and integrated in Abu Dhabi. Once fully commissioned, this capacity will enable ADFD to task satellite imagery requests, access high-resolution Earth observation data and utilise Orbitworks’ secure digital mission control platform. These capabilities will support independent monitoring of project implementation, infrastructure development and environmental conditions across multiple countries and regions, significantly enhancing the organisation’s capacity for rigorous oversight and evidence-based decision-making.
