UAE FNC Delegation Heads to 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Tanzania

The UAE Parliamentary Division will join global legislators in Arusha for discussions on governance, inclusivity and parliamentary innovation, with Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi leading the delegation.

The United Arab Emirates will be represented at the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, taking place in Arusha, Tanzania from 5th to 9th October 2026. The UAE Parliamentary Division of the Federal National Council, under the leadership of Dr. Ali Rashid Al Nuaimi as Chairman of the Division, will participate alongside delegations from parliaments worldwide.

Convened by the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Assembly and concurrent 218th session of the Governing Council will operate under the overarching theme of “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.” This framework reflects contemporary challenges in democratic governance and social cohesion across the international community.

The General Debate will furnish delegates with a comprehensive forum for deliberation and the exchange of perspectives on matters of global parliamentary significance. The Assembly is anticipated to adopt resolutions addressing both emergency items and substantive policy areas, notably including parliamentary strategies to advance the rights and empowerment of persons living with disabilities through frameworks for inclusive social development.

The convocation will encompass meetings of IPU’s principal statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and the Committee on Middle East Questions. Additionally, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians will convene, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to inclusive representation.

Specialised committee and working group sessions will examine contemporary challenges across multiple domains: the governance implications of military artificial intelligence, regulatory oversight of extractive industries, mental health advocacy, artificial intelligence’s impact on children’s rights and future employment patterns, food security in the context of climate change, and the protection of mountain and ocean ecosystems. A further agenda item will comprise a comprehensive review of the Charter of the United Nations.

Of particular significance, the Governing Council will conduct elections for a new IPU President in Arusha, selecting a successor to Dr. Tulia Ackson, whose three-year term concludes in October 2026. This election represents an important moment in the Union’s institutional governance.
