A Dozen Editions Deep: Dubai Design Week Returns with Global Vision and Local Voice

A Dozen Editions Deep: Dubai Design Week Returns with Global Vision and Local Voice

The twelfth iteration of Dubai Design Week has opened its doors at Dubai Design District, gathering over 50 countries and 40 projects to explore the intricate dance between heritage and contemporary creation.

There is a particular kind of energy that gathers when designers, architects and creatives converge with intention. It arrives as a hum of possibility, a rustling of sketches and prototypes, a shared understanding that design shapes not merely what we own, but how we inhabit the world. This energy now fills Dubai Design District as the 12th Dubai Design Week unfolds, running through 8th November under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority.

More than 40 projects and activities thread through the exhibition spaces, installations and interactive experiences, each one attempting something essential: the weaving together of cultural memory with the urgent questions of our moment. The programme explores design, innovation and sustainability through exhibitions, talks and workshops that feel less like lectures and more like conversations between minds thinking through material, form and purpose.

Khadija Al Bastaki, Senior Vice President of Dubai Design District, notes that design holds a central place in shaping how people live and move through their surroundings. The district’s commitment to this edition of Dubai Design Week strengthens Dubai’s position as a global design hub, in alignment with the Design Sector Strategy 2033.

The UAE Designer Exhibition, presented under the banner “Inherited Futures” and conceived by architect and designer AlZaina Lootah, offers particular resonance. Thirty UAE-based creatives present their work, each piece a conversation between tradition and contemporary practice. Furniture, lighting and textiles emerge from a new generation’s reinterpretation of local materials and cultural knowledge, suggesting that the past need not be preserved in amber but rather engaged as a living language.

Abwab returns this year in transformed form under the title “In Other Words”, bringing together five newly commissioned works in a shared indoor exhibition. The works by Dalia Rafeh, Grace Shieh, Kanaka Raghavan, UBIK and VARUSSI explore language, cultural memory and communication as means of connection and understanding.

Urban Commissions 2026, held under the theme “Atmospheres”, has revealed its winning proposal: Three Gardens and a Room, by Dubai-based NAO Architects, founded by Reem Nassour. The installation investigates how design can influence the quality of public life through plants, shade, light, materials and thermal conditions, transforming space into experience.

More than 25 installations across the district transform the space into an open-air gallery, addressing themes of sustainability, cultural identity and material reuse. The Forum at Downtown Design gathers more than 30 international and regional designers, architects and experts for dialogue on craftsmanship, innovation and materials. Over 50 workshops and creative sessions cover ceramics, photography, textiles, typography and product design, whilst academic institutions including the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation and American University of Sharjah contribute student projects and expertise.

Downtown Design, which also opened on Wednesday, brings together more than 300 brands and designers from over 35 countries, presenting new collections from international design houses alongside regional designers and emerging practitioners. The marketplace concludes the week on 7th and 8th November, featuring more than 80 independent makers, artisans and creative businesses from the UAE and the wider region.

What it means for Abu Dhabi

Though centred in Dubai, Dubai Design Week’s significance extends across the UAE as a whole. As we reported in our coverage of this edition, the festival gathers creative practitioners from more than 50 countries to explore design’s role in cultural heritage and innovation. The UAE Designer Exhibition places local creatives at the forefront of international dialogue, demonstrating the strength and maturity of the nation’s design culture and its ability to lead conversations about the relationship between tradition and modernity.

Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, emphasises that design is a key contributor to Dubai’s creative economy, connecting creative ideas and skills with production capabilities and commercial opportunities. This positioning strengthens the entire Emirates as a creative destination, enabling UAE-based designers to showcase their work, exchange expertise and build relationships with industry partners on a global stage. The event reinforces the UAE’s commitment to nurturing creative excellence and its position within the international design landscape.
