Abu Dhabi Biennial: A Contemporary Conversation on Belonging

Abu Dhabi Biennial: A Contemporary Conversation on Belonging

In the quieter reaches of Al Ain, a biennial devoted to contemporary art opens a conversation about the spaces we inhabit together. The Abu Dhabi Biennial has chosen as its theme “Beit: A Lexicon of Shared Space,” inviting visitors to contemplate belonging, collective memory and the ties that bind us through the works of artists working in our time.

The exhibition considers the Arabic word “beit” as both sanctuary and gathering place, a concept that extends beyond the physical dwelling to encompass broader notions of home, community and refuge. Through contemporary artworks, the biennial explores how these ideas manifest in our lived experience: the personal and the collective, the intimate and the communal, the memories we carry and those we shape together.

Set within the cultural landscape of Al Ain, the biennial becomes part of a wider ecosystem of artistic expression in the Emirates. The works on display speak to universal human experiences while maintaining a thoughtful engagement with the particular contexts and perspectives of the region. Visitors move through the exhibition as though through a carefully considered landscape of ideas, each artwork a waypoint in a larger meditation on how we understand our relationships to one another and to the places we share.

The biennial represents an ongoing commitment to fostering serious artistic discourse and creating spaces where contemporary practice can flourish. It invites us not merely to observe, but to participate in a conversation about what it means to belong, to remember collectively, and to recognise ourselves in the presence of others.
