What is the World Triathlon Multisport Championships

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships represents the pinnacle competitive event in the sport’s calendar. Established by World Triathlon, the international governing body, the championships bring together the world’s elite athletes, age group competitors and emerging talents across multiple triathlon formats. Competitors train for years to earn selection or qualification for their national teams, making the event one of the most coveted titles in endurance sport. The championships celebrate not only individual achievement but also the strength of national programmes and the evolution of triathlon as a truly global discipline.

The competing formats

The 2026 championships encompasses several triathlon distances and formats. Sprint distance triathlon combines a 750-metre swim with a 20-kilometre bike and 5-kilometre run. Olympic distance, the format that gave triathlon its greatest prominence, spans a 1.5-kilometre swim, 40-kilometre bike and 10-kilometre run. Long distance and Extended Triathlon formats test competitors across greater distances, demanding both superior aerobic capacity and mental resilience. Age group categories stratify competition by age band, ensuring fairness whilst allowing competitors from their 20s through to 80 plus to compete at the world championships level.
