The fifth edition of Al Dhafra Dates Festival, organised by Abu Dhabi Heritage, brought together the region’s date palm farming community to celebrate both the traditions and innovations that define this ancient practice. The festival featured 22 competitions, offering AED4.6 million in prizes across categories that recognised excellence in cultivation, quality and sustainability.
Beyond the competitive spirit that animated the event, Al Dhafra Dates Festival wove together a programme of heritage activities designed to honour the cultural significance of date palm farming in Abu Dhabi. These elements worked in concert to reinforce the deep-rooted traditions that have shaped the landscape and identity of the region for centuries.
A central theme throughout the festival was the integration of modern technologies with time honoured practices. These contemporary techniques contribute meaningfully to enhancing the quality of date production whilst supporting the environmental and economic sustainability of the sector. The festival thus served as a platform for demonstrating how innovation and heritage need not exist in tension, but rather can strengthen one another in pursuit of excellence.
