CBUAE and People's Bank of China Governors Forge Deeper Financial Partnership

The Central Bank of the UAE and China's monetary authority have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation, building upon the robust trading relationship that has made China the Emirates' most significant commercial partner.

Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates, has met with Pan Gongsheng, Governor of the People’s Bank of China, to chart a course towards enhanced financial collaboration between the two nations. The meeting, which took place in Bangkok during the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, brought together senior officials including Ahmad Saeed Al Qamzi, Assistant Governor for Banking and Insurance Supervision.

The discussions centred upon expanding the scope and depth of bilateral cooperation, with particular emphasis upon strengthening financial and banking connections whilst facilitating greater flows of trade and investment between the two countries. The meeting reflected the enduring strategic partnership that exists between the United Arab Emirates and the People’s Republic of China, rooted in the visionary leadership of both nations.

Mr Balama expressed his commitment to advancing this partnership, noting that the longstanding ties between the two nations provide a robust foundation upon which to build. He emphasised the determination of the UAE to deepen financial and banking linkages whilst fostering the seamless movement of commercial and investment capital across both economies.

The significance of this relationship is underscored by the scale of bilateral trade, with the People’s Republic of China standing as the UAE’s foremost trading partner globally. Non-oil bilateral trade reached approximately AED410 billion, equivalent to US$111.5 billion, during 2025, representing a substantial year on year increase of 24.5 per cent. This remarkable growth trajectory demonstrates the vitality and resilience of the commercial bonds between the two nations, and the considerable potential for further expansion through deepened financial cooperation.
