Department of Municipalities and Transport unveils comprehensive Mussafah road enhancement initiative

A transformative infrastructure programme spanning 13 kilometres will elevate connectivity across Mussafah, Mohamed Bin Zayed City and Zayed City, introducing advanced highway systems and enhanced accessibility throughout the industrial district.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport has unveiled an ambitious programme to enhance the road networks serving Mussafah, orchestrating a comprehensive transformation across approximately 13 kilometres of critical thoroughfares. The initiative addresses the intricate demands of an area that serves as a vital conduit for residents commuting to employment, commercial enterprises transporting goods and communities undertaking daily journeys throughout the region.

At the heart of this development lies a sophisticated free-flowing highway along 8th Street, engineered with three generously proportioned lanes in each direction to facilitate uninterrupted through-traffic. Complementing this central artery are three additional lanes on each side, thoughtfully designed to permit convenient access to the diverse shopping and amenity offerings within the locality without imposing disruption upon the expressway’s fluid movement. The comprehensive street design accommodates an estimated 4,000 vehicles per hour, reflecting meticulous planning calibrated to contemporary and prospective traffic demands.

The enhancement programme encompasses further refinements throughout the network, including strategic upgrades to four interchanges along E30, refined connections bridging 8th Street and E20, and carefully coordinated modifications to nine pivotal junctions. Beyond these terrestrial improvements, the initiative incorporates the development of two new bridges establishing enhanced passage between Mussafah and Mohamed Bin Zayed City, accompanied by a dedicated pedestrian crossing ensuring equitable accessibility for all users of the network.

Engineer Eisa Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Director-General of Infrastructure Development at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, emphasised the multifaceted approach underlying the project. Noting that Mussafah’s road infrastructure accommodates an exceptionally diverse range of users and purposes, he underscored the imperative of planning interventions that distinguish between through-traffic and local access whilst strengthening connections with neighbouring communities. This philosophy, he explained, ensures that economic vitality flourishes whilst quotidian journeys become progressively more convenient and secure.

The Director-General further articulated the scheme’s temporal dimension, characterising it as enabling infrastructure that anticipates Abu Dhabi’s extended developmental trajectory. By establishing foundational capacity and connectivity today, the Department positions the network to accommodate future expansion and interconnection, ensuring that contemporary decisions serve the emirate’s prosperity across generations.

This Mussafah programme contributes meaningfully to broader initiatives strengthening the emirate’s connectivity fabric. Complementary efforts include a planned two-tunnel undersea link connecting Abu Dhabi Island’s eastern extremity to Mussafah, traversing beneath both Khor Al Maqta and the Al Hudayriyat Island channel.
